Shelby & Harley’s Beautiful Spring Wedding at The Story, Durham
There are weddings where everything runs perfectly to time, the weather behaves itself, the venue staff are exceptional, the guests are full of energy and love, and the couple simply radiate happiness from start to finish.
Shelby and Harley’s wedding at The Story in Durham was exactly that kind of day.
A gloriously warm late-May afternoon, emotional moments throughout, laughter echoing around the Grand Staircase, and one very stylish white Rolls Royce arriving right on cue — this wedding had such a brilliant atmosphere from beginning to end.
The Story has quickly become one of the North East’s standout wedding venues, and days like this remind me exactly why. Elegant interiors, stunning architectural details, beautiful light, and a team of staff who genuinely care about every wedding they host. As always, the staff at The Story were absolutely exceptional throughout the day, calm, organised, helpful and endlessly professional even as the soaring temperatures tested everyone’s energy levels.
And speaking of punctuality…
Guests Arriving at The Story
By 3.30pm, Harley and the guests were already arriving bang on the dot. There was a fantastic turnout for Shelby and Harley, with lots of family and friends gathering outside The Story enjoying the beautiful sunshine before the ceremony began.
One of the things I always love photographing before a ceremony is those little in-between moments as guests arrive. Hugs between family members who haven’t seen each other in years. Nervous laughter. Friends adjusting ties and dresses. The anticipation before the day truly begins.
The atmosphere outside The Story was buzzing. The sunshine was relentless from the very beginning and there was already that unmistakable feeling that this was going to be one of those properly hot wedding days.
Harley looked relaxed and excited as guests filtered in around him. There was plenty of laughter, handshakes, hugs, and lots of smiling faces as everyone gathered together waiting for Shelby’s arrival.
Shelby’s Arrival in Style
At 3.45pm, Shelby arrived with her mum in absolutely beautiful fashion.
Pulling up outside The Story in a stunning white Rolls Royce, Shelby made an unforgettable entrance. The sunshine bouncing off the car gave everything an almost cinematic look. Shelby looked absolutely stunning in her beautiful long flowing wedding dress and elegant veil. The way the sunlight caught the movement of the fabric as she stepped from the white Rolls Royce created such a timeless, romantic look. Her dress suited the elegant surroundings of The Story perfectly and the veil added an extra touch of classic bridal style throughout the day, especially during portraits on the famous Story Steps and inside the Grand Staircase.
Shelby looked absolutely incredible.
There’s always a moment before a ceremony where everything suddenly becomes very real, and you could feel that emotion building as Shelby stepped out of the Rolls Royce with her mum beside her.
Before heading inside, we took advantage of one of The Story’s most iconic locations — the famous Story Steps.
The steps at The Story are perfect for elegant family portraits and they suited the timeless feel of Shelby and Harley’s wedding perfectly. We captured some beautiful portraits there with Shelby alongside both her mum and dad before heading upstairs.
The light inside The Story on sunny days is just gorgeous, and with the warmth pouring through the windows it created such a lovely atmosphere for those quieter moments before the ceremony.
Bridal Suite Portraits
Before the ceremony began, we spent a little time in the Bridal Suite capturing some relaxed portraits of Shelby with her mum.
These are always some of my favourite moments to photograph during a wedding day.
Away from the crowds and the excitement downstairs, everything slows down for a few minutes. There’s time for deep breaths, little smiles, emotional glances, and those calm moments before walking down the aisle.
Shelby and her mum shared some genuinely lovely moments together. You could see just how much the day meant to them both.
The Bridal Suite at The Story offers such beautiful natural light for portraits, soft, elegant and timeless. Perfect for capturing those emotional pre-ceremony moments without things ever feeling too staged or overcomplicated.
An Emotional Ceremony Full of Joy
From the second the ceremony began, it was clear just how loved Shelby and Harley are.
The ceremony itself was packed with emotion from start to finish. There were tears, huge smiles, bursts of laughter, emotional glances across the aisle, and countless happy reactions from family and friends throughout.
These are always the moments I look for as a wedding photographer.
The real moments.
The genuine reactions.
The little smiles between a couple when nobody else notices.
Shelby and Harley were brilliant throughout the ceremony. Relaxed, emotional, happy and completely absorbed in the moment together.
There were several moments where guests were visibly wiping away tears before immediately bursting into laughter seconds later. Those emotional swings are what make wedding ceremonies so special to photograph because they tell the real story of the day.
The atmosphere in the ceremony room felt incredibly warm in every sense of the word. Emotionally warm, joyful and welcoming — but also physically very, very hot.
By the end of the ceremony, everyone definitely knew they’d attended a proper summer wedding.
Grand Staircase Portraits
Following the ceremony, we headed straight to one of the standout locations inside The Story for portraits on the magnificent Grand Staircase.
This is one of the most impressive spaces in the venue and it always creates such elegant wedding photographs.
Shelby and Harley looked fantastic together as newlyweds. Still buzzing from the ceremony, still smiling constantly, and still processing everything that had just happened.
The staircase portraits were relaxed and natural, keeping things simple and letting the venue do what it does best. The clean lines, soft tones and beautiful architecture at The Story create such a timeless backdrop for wedding photography.
And while the venue looked calm and elegant inside…
Outside was another story entirely.
Group Photos in the Heatwave
Straight after the staircase portraits, we headed outside for the group photographs.
And honestly…
It was HOT.
Very hot.
Possibly too hot.
The kind of heat where everyone is searching for shade between photographs and trying not to melt in formalwear.
To be fair to everyone involved, they handled it brilliantly. Despite the soaring temperatures, Shelby and Harley’s family and friends were fantastic throughout the group photo session. Everyone stayed patient, smiling and cheerful even while standing in the blazing sunshine.
We worked through lots of family groups and guest photographs as efficiently as possible, making sure everyone could get back inside and cool down.
One thing I always try to do during weddings like this is keep things moving quickly and relaxed. Nobody wants to spend hours standing in direct sunlight during a heatwave, especially the bride and groom.
By the time we finished the larger group photographs, Shelby and Harley were definitely feeling the effects of the heat.
And honestly, who could blame them?
Choosing Comfort Over Tradition
Originally, the plan had been to spend more time creating bride and groom portraits on the lawn outside The Story.
But after standing in the heat for such a long stretch during the group photographs, Shelby and Harley made the very sensible decision to skip the longer portrait session and head straight into their reception where they could finally cool down properly.
And you know what?
I absolutely support decisions like that.
A wedding day should never feel like an endurance test.
The best photographs always come when couples are relaxed, comfortable and enjoying themselves. If someone is overheating and desperate for air conditioning, forcing a long portrait session rarely helps anybody.
Instead, we kept things simple and grabbed a few quick portraits in front of the beautiful white Rolls Royce before they headed inside to celebrate with everyone properly.
Those portraits ended up perfectly capturing the feel of the day anyway — elegant, joyful, relaxed and real.
Sometimes less really is more.
A Huge Mention for Lily Curates
I also have to give a massive mention to Lily, the content creator behind Lily Curates on Facebook and Instagram.
This was one of Lily’s first weddings in the content creation world, but honestly, you never would have known.
She performed absolutely faultlessly throughout the day.
Professional, calm, organised and incredibly easy to work alongside from start to finish. Wedding days move quickly and having suppliers around you who understand timing, communication and teamwork makes such a difference.
Lily blended seamlessly into the day and did a brilliant job capturing behind-the-scenes moments and content for Shelby and Harley.
I’ve no doubt whatsoever that she’s going to do incredibly well in the wedding industry moving forward.
The Story Continues to Impress
Every time I photograph a wedding at The Story, I come away impressed.
Not just because the venue itself is stunning, which it absolutely is, but because the team there consistently deliver such a high standard of service.
From the organisation behind the scenes to helping guests, suppliers and the couple throughout the day, the staff at The Story were exceptional as always.
Even during one of the hottest wedding days we’ve had this year, they kept everything running smoothly and professionally from beginning to end.
That calm professionalism matters enormously on a wedding day, and Shelby and Harley were incredibly well looked after throughout.
Congratulations Shelby & Harley
Shelby and Harley’s wedding was full of everything that makes weddings special to photograph.
Emotion.
Laughter.
Family.
Happy tears.
Sunshine.
And moments that genuinely mattered.
Despite the heatwave conditions, the entire day felt relaxed, joyful and full of love from beginning to end.
Thank you both for having me there to capture such a brilliant day at The Story.
And hopefully next time we attempt summer portraits outside, we’ll all be about ten degrees cooler.
