Janet and Peter’s Beautiful Newcastle Civic Centre Wedding | North East Wedding Photographer

There are some wedding days that leave you smiling all the way home, and Janet and Peter’s wedding at Newcastle Civic Centre on the 30th May was absolutely one of those days. A short and sweet celebration filled with sunshine, emotion, laughter, confetti and one very excited dog called Roxy.

As a North East wedding photographer shooting weddings all across the UK, I have photographed celebrations in grand country houses, rustic barns, city centre venues and hidden countryside gems, but Newcastle Civic Centre remains one of my absolute favourites. The architecture, atmosphere and history of the building make it a dream location for wedding photography. And for someone like me, who is a massive fan of Brutalist architecture, it really is photographic heaven.

Arriving Early at Newcastle Civic Centre

Experience has taught me that parking in Newcastle can sometimes be a challenge, especially on warm sunny days when the city is alive with activity. So, as always, I arrived nice and early. It gave me the perfect opportunity to sit in the sunshine for a while and soak in the incredible surroundings before the celebrations began.

Newcastle Civic Centre is one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. Opened in 1968 and designed by architect George Kenyon, the building quickly became a symbol of modern Newcastle. Its striking Brutalist-inspired architecture, sweeping staircases and grand civic interiors create an atmosphere that feels both timeless and cinematic.

The building itself is Grade II listed and filled with beautiful marble finishes, enormous windows and stunning open spaces. For wedding photography, it is an absolute gift. Every corner offers another incredible backdrop for portraits and candid moments.

I could genuinely spend hours photographing inside Newcastle Civic Centre. Did I mention I absolutely love this building?

Guests Arrive in the Beautiful Newcastle Sunshine

Dead on the dot of 1pm, Peter arrived alongside his best man and brother Joe. One by one, guests started gathering outside Newcastle Civic Centre, enjoying the beautiful sunshine before making their way inside.

There is always something special about the atmosphere before a wedding ceremony begins. The hugs, handshakes, nervous smiles and excited conversations all become part of the story of the day.

As a documentary-style wedding photographer, those natural moments are exactly what I love to capture most.

The warm weather only added to the relaxed feeling of the day. Guests chatted happily outside before filing into the Civic Centre ready for Janet and Peter’s ceremony.

Janet Arrives with Judith and Roxy

At 1.15pm, Janet arrived alongside her sister and bridesmaid Judith. Waiting to greet them outside was Janet’s son Dominic and the real four-legged star of the day, their lovely Jackapoo Roxy.

Roxy was instantly excited by all the attention, smiles and activity. Wedding days are clearly very exciting when you are a dog.

Before heading upstairs for the ceremony, we spent a few moments capturing some portraits of Janet outside the Civic Centre. The sunshine bouncing off the building created beautiful soft light, perfect for relaxed and natural photographs. Janet looked absolutely radiant.

Those quieter moments before the ceremony are always some of my favourites to photograph. There is anticipation, excitement and emotion all wrapped into one.

Inside the Incredible Newcastle Civic Centre

After capturing those portraits, it was time for me to make my way upstairs towards the ceremony room on the second floor.

And wow.

Every single time I walk through Newcastle Civic Centre I notice something different. The towering staircases, clean architectural lines, huge windows and incredible symmetry make it one of the best wedding photography venues in the North East.

Guests had gathered outside the ceremony room chatting together while waiting to take their seats. It gave me plenty of opportunity to capture candid photographs before the ceremony began.

These moments often become some of the most treasured memories. Friends reconnecting, family members quietly reflecting and the growing excitement before the ceremony starts all help tell the complete story of the wedding day.

A Quiet Moment with Fred

As guests took their seats inside the beautiful Leazes Suite, everything suddenly became calm and quiet for a brief moment.

I found myself sitting alongside Janet’s proud dad Fred, who would soon be walking his daughter down the aisle.

We chatted together for a few moments before Fred smiled and mentioned that his “old legs didn’t work quite as well as they used to.” As Janet arrived, I helped Fred carefully back to his feet before taking my place ready for the ceremony.

It was such a simple but meaningful moment. Those small interactions are often the moments that stay with me long after a wedding day ends.

Janet and Peter’s Emotional Wedding Ceremony

The Leazes Suite at Newcastle Civic Centre is a beautiful ceremony space filled with elegant light and understated style.

As Janet and Fred appeared at the entrance to the room, emotion instantly filled the space.

Peter’s face said absolutely everything.

The ceremony itself was heartfelt, emotional and full of genuine love. There were smiles, tears and plenty of laughter shared between family and friends throughout.

And of course, Roxy made sure everyone knew just how excited she was too.

Dogs at weddings always bring such a lovely relaxed atmosphere, and Roxy added so much personality to the ceremony.

One of the things I love most about smaller weddings like Janet and Peter’s is how personal they feel. Every guest matters deeply. Every interaction feels meaningful. There is an intimacy and warmth that creates truly emotional wedding photographs.

Wedding Portraits on the Grand Staircase

After the ceremony, it was time for bride and groom portraits on the grand staircase inside Newcastle Civic Centre.

Honestly, this staircase is one of my favourite portrait locations anywhere in the North East.

The sweeping architecture, natural light and elegant lines create an incredible setting for timeless wedding photography.

Janet and Peter were completely relaxed together which made photographing them feel effortless. We wandered through the building capturing portraits that felt natural, elegant and authentic to them as a couple.

And yes… I still absolutely love this building.

Confetti Chaos Outside Newcastle Civic Centre

Once outside, it was time to organise everyone for the confetti photographs.

And wow.

There was a LOT of confetti.

Confetti moments are always wonderfully unpredictable and that is exactly why I love photographing them. The laughter, reactions and chaos create some of the happiest images from the entire wedding day.

Janet and Peter walked through an explosion of colour and confetti while guests cheered around them in the glorious Newcastle sunshine.

Perfect.

Formal Family Photographs in the Park

After the confetti celebrations, we made our way into the nearby park for the formal family group photographs.

The sunshine brought Newcastle to life. People relaxed on the grass enjoying the warm spring weather while we quickly worked through the family photographs in a relaxed and organised way.

I always aim to keep group photographs efficient and stress-free. Weddings are about spending time with loved ones, not standing around endlessly posing for photographs. Keeping things calm and natural helps everyone enjoy the experience while still creating beautiful memories.

Once the family photographs were complete, Janet and Peter were free to continue celebrating with their loved ones.

A Short and Sweet Newcastle Wedding

And then, just like that, it was my time to make my exit.

I left Newcastle Civic Centre feeling genuinely happy, full of the joys of spring and incredibly grateful to have captured such precious moments for Janet and Peter.

Sometimes weddings do not need to be huge or extravagant to feel special. Janet and Peter’s wedding was proof that love, family, sunshine and meaningful moments are more than enough.

Relaxed, emotional, joyful and full of personality from beginning to end.

Exactly the kind of wedding I love photographing.

Relaxed Wedding Photography Across the North East and UK

If you are planning your own wedding and are looking for relaxed, natural and storytelling wedding photography, I would absolutely love to hear from you.

Although based in the North East, I photograph weddings all across the UK, capturing everything from intimate city ceremonies to countryside celebrations and destination-style weddings closer to home.

My approach is always about genuine moments rather than awkward posing. Real laughter, real emotion and real memories.

Newcastle Civic Centre remains one of the most unique wedding venues in the North East and offers incredible opportunities for timeless wedding photographs whatever the season.

From its grand architecture and elegant interiors to nearby green spaces perfect for portraits, it is a dream venue full of style and character.

Janet and Peter’s beautiful wedding was the perfect reminder that the simplest wedding days are often the most meaningful.

Congratulations once again to Janet and Peter.

And an extra thank you to Roxy for stealing everybody’s hearts.
