Kelsie & Sean | The Story, Durham | Friday 22nd May
There are some wedding afternoons that just feel different from the moment you arrive. The light looks better somehow, the atmosphere feels calm and full of excitement, and everyone seems completely ready to enjoy every second of the day ahead. Friday 22nd May was exactly that.
Kelsie and Sean were married at The Story in Durham on what turned out to be one of those perfect North East spring days. Warm sunshine, blue skies, relaxed guests and two people who looked genuinely delighted to finally be getting married. From the moment I arrived ahead of the 4pm ceremony to the moment I packed the cameras away later that evening, the entire day felt effortless in the very best way.
As always, I arrived ahead of schedule. One of the things I love most about wedding photography is capturing the story from the very beginning. Not just the big moments, but the little details and atmosphere before the ceremony begins. The nervous energy, the arrivals, the conversations between guests who have not seen each other in years, the groom pretending to be calm while quietly counting down the minutes until the 4pm ceremony.
The Story is one of those venues that works beautifully for photography in every season, but in sunshine it really comes alive. The grand exterior, the steps, the huge windows and the elegance of the staircase all combine to create a venue that feels both modern and timeless at the same time. I have photographed weddings there a number of times now and every wedding somehow feels completely different.
When I arrived, Sean was already there greeting guests as they arrived. Like most grooms, he was trying his best to look relaxed and composed while also quietly counting down the minutes until Kelsie arrived. There is always something brilliant about photographing that part of the day. The groom shaking hands, laughing with friends, checking details with the registrars and trying to take everything in.
Sean looked incredibly smart and was in great spirits from the start. The sunshine helped of course. Guests gathered outside enjoying the warmth and chatting on the steps while the atmosphere steadily built towards the ceremony. There was no stress, no panic, just excitement.
I spent time photographing the early arrivals, guests greeting one another and the small moments that often become some of the most meaningful memories later on. Wedding photography is never just about the ceremony itself. It is about preserving the entire experience of the day.
Not long afterwards, Kelsie arrived with Grandfather Ken.
One of my favourite things about documentary wedding photography is watching reactions unfold naturally. As soon as the wedding car arrived there was an immediate shift in atmosphere. Guests straightened themselves up, smiles appeared everywhere and suddenly the day felt very real.
Kelsie looked absolutely stunning.
The sunshine bouncing off the stonework outside The Story created the most beautiful natural light as she stepped from the car with Ken beside her. It was such a lovely moment to photograph. Calm, emotional and full of anticipation all at once.
Ken looked incredibly proud walking alongside Kelsie. Those are the moments that always stay with people long after the wedding day itself. The quiet conversations before entering the venue, the reassuring smile, the shared excitement and emotion.
Before heading into the ceremony room, we spent a few moments on the famous Story steps capturing some relaxed photographs together. The architecture at The Story creates such an incredible backdrop and with the sunshine pouring in it gave everything a soft, elegant feel.
One of the things I always try to do on a wedding day is keep portraits relaxed and natural. Nobody wants to spend hours away from their guests posing awkwardly for photographs. Instead, I prefer creating space for genuine interaction and natural emotion. Kelsie and Ken were brilliant together and those few quiet minutes before the ceremony produced some really beautiful images.
We also spent a little time in the Bridal Suite capturing portraits of Kelsie before the ceremony began. The natural light in there is fantastic and it gave us a chance to create some calm portraits before the emotions of the ceremony took over.
Kelsie was incredibly relaxed.
There was excitement, of course, but also a real sense that she was fully present and enjoying every second of the afternoon. Those are always the best weddings to photograph. When couples trust the process, relax into the day and simply enjoy being with the people they love.
As guests took their seats and the ceremony was about to begin, the atmosphere shifted once again.
Sean waited at the front.
Guests smiled.
And then Kelsie walked down the aisle with Ken.
There are some moments that never lose their impact no matter how many weddings you photograph. That walk down the aisle is always one of them.
The emotion in the room was immediate.
You could see it on Sean’s face straight away. Guests wiping away tears, huge smiles across the room, laughter breaking through emotional moments. It had everything.
That is what I love most about weddings.
No two ceremonies are ever the same.
Every couple brings their own personality, their own energy and their own story into the room. Kelsie and Sean’s ceremony was full of warmth and emotion from beginning to end. There were moments of laughter one second followed by genuine tears the next.
The ceremony in the beautiful Oswald Room at The Story felt intimate, emotional and full of warmth. The registrars were brilliant throughout, creating a relaxed atmosphere and allowing Kelsie and Sean to really enjoy every second rather than feeling overwhelmed by it. The ceremony flowed beautifully and there was such a strong sense of connection between everyone in the room.
One of the things I noticed throughout the ceremony was how often Kelsie and Sean looked at each other and laughed. It sounds simple, but it says everything. They were completely comfortable together, completely themselves.
That authenticity always photographs beautifully.
Real emotion will always matter more than perfect posing.
As the ceremony came to an end and they were officially married, the room erupted into applause and cheers. Those first moments after the ceremony are always fantastic to photograph because everything becomes real all at once.
The relief.
The excitement.
The happiness.
Guests leaning in for hugs.
Parents trying not to cry.
Friends cheering loudly from the back.
It is pure emotion and pure joy.
After the ceremony we headed towards the grand staircase for some newly married portraits.
The staircase at The Story is one of the standout features of the venue and creates such a cinematic backdrop for photographs. Combined with the natural light pouring through the windows, it was the perfect place to take a few relaxed portraits while the excitement of the ceremony was still fresh.
Kelsie and Sean needed very little direction.
They were naturally relaxed together and spent most of the time laughing and talking to each other while I photographed around those moments. Some of my favourite wedding photographs happen in those small in-between seconds when couples forget the camera is even there.
That was definitely the case here.
The joy was completely genuine.
After the portraits came one of the now almost essential wedding traditions.
The bubble run.
I genuinely love photographing bubble exits. They create movement, excitement and brilliant reactions every single time. Guests lined both sides outside The Story armed with bubble guns while Kelsie and Sean prepared themselves for the walk through.
Within seconds the air was filled with bubbles catching the sunlight perfectly.
Guests laughed.
Kelsie and Sean walked through smiling from ear to ear.
The sunshine made everything look even more spectacular and the entire sequence was one of the highlights of the day.
One thing I always encourage couples to remember is that wedding photography works best when moments are allowed to happen naturally. The bubble run worked so well because everyone fully embraced it. Nobody held back. It became less about the photographs and more about everyone genuinely enjoying the moment together.
Straight after the bubble run we moved into group photographs on the steps outside The Story.
Group photographs are often one of the quickest parts of the day when everything is planned properly beforehand and that was definitely the case here. The sunshine gave us perfect conditions and the steps created a fantastic backdrop for family photographs.
One thing I always try to do with group photographs is keep them efficient and relaxed. Nobody wants to spend an hour standing in formal lines. The goal is always to capture the important family combinations while still allowing everyone plenty of time to enjoy the wedding.
Kelsie and Sean’s families were brilliant.
Everyone was organised, cheerful and ready to enjoy themselves which made everything flow perfectly.
Once the group photographs were finished, we took advantage of the beautiful afternoon light for some bride and groom portraits around the venue.
This was probably my favourite part of the day.
The sunshine had softened slightly into that beautiful warm afternoon glow photographers absolutely love. The grounds and architecture around The Story looked incredible and we were able to create a mixture of relaxed documentary moments and more elegant portraits without ever taking too much time away from the celebrations.
Kelsie and Sean were amazing throughout.
Completely natural.
Completely comfortable.
Completely focused on each other.
That always makes the biggest difference.
I often say that the best wedding photographs are not really about posing at all. They are about connection. The way couples interact, laugh, hold hands and look at each other naturally tells the real story of the day.
That connection was obvious with Kelsie and Sean from beginning to end.
We wandered around outside The Story using the sunshine, architecture and open space to create a variety of images while still keeping everything relaxed and enjoyable. There was no pressure, no awkwardness and no endless posing.
Just moments.
Real moments.
After the portraits at The Story, I briefly headed over to Broomside Park in Belmont where the wedding party were stopping for a meal and evening celebrations.
Before everyone settled in for the meal, we took the opportunity to photograph a quick mock cutting of the cake. It was relaxed, informal and a lovely way to round off the coverage before the evening celebrations really got underway.
The light by this point was absolutely gorgeous.
It was only a brief stop for me, but it rounded off the coverage perfectly and gave me the chance to capture a few final moments before heading home.
The mock cake cutting photographs were great fun to capture and once again reflected the personality of the day perfectly.
Relaxed.
Happy.
Authentic.
There is something really enjoyable about finishing a wedding photography coverage feeling like everything simply clicked into place naturally.
That was exactly how this wedding felt.
From the moment I arrived ahead of the 4pm ceremony to the final photographs in the beautiful evening sunshine, the entire day flowed beautifully. The weather was incredible, the guests were wonderful, the venue looked stunning and Kelsie and Sean fully embraced every moment.
It is impossible not to mention the staff at The Story as well.
As always, they were fantastic throughout the entire day.
Professional, calm, organised and genuinely friendly.
A great wedding venue is never just about the building itself. It is about the people who help create the experience and The Story consistently delivers one of the best wedding experiences in the North East. Every member of staff worked incredibly hard behind the scenes to ensure everything ran smoothly and it genuinely makes such a difference to the atmosphere of the day.
As a wedding photographer, working alongside experienced venue staff always helps create a more relaxed environment for couples and guests alike. Everything felt seamless from beginning to end.
By the time I packed the cameras away and headed home, I left feeling incredibly happy.
Not just because we had amazing weather.
Not just because the photographs looked beautiful.
But because the entire day felt real.
Weddings are ultimately about people.
About family.
About connection.
About emotion.
And Kelsie and Sean’s wedding had all of that in abundance.
The tears during the ceremony.
The laughter between friends.
The pride on Ken’s face.
The excitement during the bubble run.
The quiet moments together on the staircase.
The warm sunshine during portraits.
Every part of the day contributed to a story that felt genuine from beginning to end.
That is always what I hope to capture through my photography.
Not just how a wedding looked.
But how it felt.
Kelsie and Sean, thank you so much for allowing me to be part of such an incredible day. It was an absolute pleasure photographing your wedding at The Story and I genuinely loved every minute of it.
I wish you both a lifetime of happiness together.
And to Grandfather Ken, thank you for bringing such warmth and emotion to the day. Watching you walk Kelsie down the aisle was one of those moments that nobody in the room will ever forget.
Congratulations again to you both.
What a beautiful day.
