There’s something wonderfully reassuring about a weather forecast that threatens the worst and then quietly steps aside to allow something beautiful to unfold. Lianne and Derek’s wedding day at The Story in Durham was one of those rare, magical occasions where everything seemed to conspire in their favour. Rain had been predicted for days, conversations leading up to the wedding had circled around umbrellas and contingency plans, yet when the day arrived, the skies held firm. Soft light replaced storm clouds, and the atmosphere carried that unmistakable sense of anticipation that only a wedding can bring.

Winter weddings in the North East are a bit like ordering a takeaway in the snow. You expect delays, disappointment, and possibly a mild emotional breakdown. So when Louise and Graeme’s wedding day arrived with bright blue skies and actual sunshine, there was a collective sense of confusion. People squinted. Guests looked up suspiciously. Someone probably asked if this was a trick.

It was still absolutely freezing, of course. This is Britain. We don’t get everything.

But that unexpected bright day brought smiles to everyone and set the tone perfectly for a wedding that was relaxed, intimate, and full of genuine warmth. No fuss, no drama, just the people who mattered most. A short and sweet celebration with 23 guests, plenty of laughter, and enough love to warm even the coldest February afternoon.

There are weddings you look forward to, weddings you know will be beautiful, and then there are weddings that quietly stay with you long after the final dance. Lynn and Joe’s wedding at Shotton Grange in Northumberland was one of those days. A day of relentless rain, huge laughter, emotional moments, and one very confident five-year-old ring bearer who pretty much stole the show.

I left home in early with the familiar feeling of excitement that only a wedding morning brings. The forecast had not been kind. Heavy rain. Wind. The kind of North East weather that can make even the most seasoned photographer glance at the sky and mutter a few choice words. But experience has taught me that rain rarely ruins a wedding. If anything, it brings a certain magic, a closeness, a sense of shared adventure. And as it turned out, that was exactly the case.

Thursday 5th February arrived quietly in Durham. Dark early, rain-settled, the kind of evening that feels enclosed rather than bleak. The weather didn’t announce itself — it simply existed, deepening the colour of the streets and softening the edges of the day.

I arrived at 4.30pm at The Story. Inside, the pace was already established. Calm. Unhurried. The staff moved through the building with ease, aware of where everyone needed to be without ever making it obvious. Coats were taken, doors opened, small reassurances offered in passing. Nothing felt managed, only supported.

There are days that linger with you long after the last frame is taken, when the light, the laughter, and the emotion stay vivid in your mind. Tyler and Wesley’s Halloween wedding at The Story, Durham, was one of those days — the kind that makes you fall in love all over again with photographing people and their moments.

Halloween weddings have a rhythm all their own. There’s a sense of drama to the season — crisp air, long shadows, a little mystery in the atmosphere. It’s a time that invites individuality, and Tyler and Wesley embraced it perfectly: stylish, authentic, emotional, and with just the right amount of autumn magic.

Durham: a city of history, charm, and ancient stone that glows gold in the sun. Home to one of the UK’s most breathtaking cathedrals, cobbled streets steeped in centuries of story, and — as of now — one of the most unforgettable weddings I’ve had the pleasure of photographing.

Natalie and Richie’s wedding at St Chad’s College was my first visit to this incredible venue, and I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction. Nestled quietly in the shadow of Durham Cathedral, this tucked-away gem has the elegance of a fairytale location without any of the pretentiousness. Think Harry Potter architecture meets heartfelt modern love story, and you’re halfway there.

Weddings don’t come much more joyous, unique, or bubbly (literally) than Kay and Gareth’s! If you're ready for a story filled with sunshine, three dogs in formalwear, a surprise ring bearer, bubble guns, balloons, and some truly beautiful moments of love and laughter—then buckle up. You’re in for a good one.

I photograph a lot of weddings at The Story in Durham—it’s one of my absolute favourite venues for a reason. The staff are always incredible, the building is stunning, and the couples I meet there always bring their own unique twist to the day. But Kay and Gareth’s celebration? From the moment I arrived at Redworth Hall at 1pm, I knew it was going to be a special one. Bridal prep was in full swing, and the vibe was exactly what any photographer hopes for — relaxed, upbeat, and filled with laughter. Stephanie was joined by her three bridesmaids in the grand surroundings of one of Redworth Hall’s beautifully styled rooms. There was a steady flow of prosecco, a soundtrack of calm giggles, and that electric, happy tension that only a wedding day can bring.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again — I absolutely adore working at The Story. It's not just the stunning decor, the immaculate rooms, or the thoughtful layout. It’s the staff. The wonderful people who run this place are kind, welcoming, professional, and always go the extra mile. It really does feel like home when I walk through those doors. Jean, Darren, and I were welcomed with warm smiles and genuine care, as always — and that tone carried beautifully throughout their no-fuss wedding day.

This venue has quickly become one of the most sought-after locations for weddings in the region, and it’s easy to see why.
