Lianne & Dereks Wedding at The Story, Durham
There’s something wonderfully reassuring about a weather forecast that threatens the worst and then quietly steps aside to allow something beautiful to unfold. Lianne and Derek’s wedding day at The Story in Durham was one of those rare, magical occasions where everything seemed to conspire in their favour. Rain had been predicted for days, conversations leading up to the wedding had circled around umbrellas and contingency plans, yet when the day arrived, the skies held firm. Soft light replaced storm clouds, and the atmosphere carried that unmistakable sense of anticipation that only a wedding can bring.
The arrival of The Groom and Guests
I arrived around thirty minutes before the ceremony, and as is so often the case with weddings at The Story, the day was already well underway. Derek, Best Man Neil, and many of the guests had gathered early, filling the space with laughter, conversation, and that familiar blend of nerves and excitement. There’s always a particular energy in those moments before a ceremony begins. It’s a mixture of quiet reflection, warm greetings, and the subtle hum of expectation. Derek carried himself with calm confidence, though the occasional glance toward the entrance told its own story. The excitement was building.
After a relaxed round of early photographs outside, the fantastic team at The Story guided Derek and the guests into the Oswald Suite. One of the many things I love about photographing weddings here is how smoothly everything runs. The staff are always attentive, always warm, and always completely invested in making the day perfect for everyone involved. Their calm professionalism allows couples and guests to simply enjoy the moment, and it makes a world of difference.
While Derek and his guests settled in, all attention shifted toward the much-anticipated arrival of Lianne.
The arrival of The Bride
And what an arrival it was.
A beautiful blue Porsche rolled into view, instantly drawing smiles from passers-by. There’s something undeniably special about a wedding car, but this one had personality and elegance in equal measure. As Lianne stepped out, all eyes were on her. She looked absolutely fabulous. Her dress was intricately detailed, perfectly fitted, and carried that rare balance of timeless sophistication and modern grace. It suited her completely. There’s a moment at every wedding when everything suddenly feels real, and this was it.
Alongside Lianne was Flowergirl Isla, whose beaming smile could quite easily have powered the entire day. From the very first moment to the very last, she radiated joy. Weddings are often filled with beautiful details and carefully planned touches, but sometimes it’s the pure, natural happiness of a child that leaves the strongest impression. Isla brought warmth and light wherever she went.
Soon after, Lianne’s sons, Josh and Jamie, arrived. Their arrival added another layer of emotion to the day. Josh, dressed in his Forces Ceremonial Uniform, looked incredibly proud and composed. It’s always moving to see the deep connection between a bride and her children on a wedding day. This was clearly a celebration not just of a couple, but of families coming together. The moment Josh and Jamie were greeted by their girlfriends Belle and Millie was filled with affection and excitement. There was laughter, hugs, and that unmistakable sense that something truly special was unfolding.
Before heading inside, the bridal party gathered on The Story’s iconic steps for photographs. These moments before a ceremony are often some of my favourites. The energy is vibrant and alive. Nerves are still present, but they’re softened by excitement and the support of loved ones. Lianne stood surrounded by those closest to her, and the atmosphere was filled with anticipation and joy.
Bridal Suite Portraits
From there, they were ushered into the Bridal Suite, where a calm and intimate atmosphere replaced the buzz of the outside world. This quieter space allowed for some beautiful, relaxed photographs. During this time, Lianne was joined by two of Derek’s sons, Ted and Leo. Their presence was another reminder that this day was about more than a marriage. It was about unity, connection, and the coming together of families. Watching their interactions, you could see the bonds already formed, the warmth and affection that had grown long before this day.
As the ceremony time approached, the mood shifted again. There’s always a moment when the laughter softens, the voices lower, and the reality of what is about to happen settles in. It’s a moment of reflection and emotion, and it’s always a privilege to witness.
The Ceremony
The ceremony began with Ted and Leo walking down the aisle. They did so with quiet confidence, setting the tone beautifully. Next came Isla, her radiant smile unchanged, her excitement evident in every step. And finally, Lianne made her entrance, accompanied by Josh and Jamie. The moment was powerful, emotional, and filled with love. The connection between them was unmistakable, and there was barely a dry eye in the room.
The ceremony itself was a celebration in every sense of the word. It was filled with smiles, laughter, and heartfelt moments. There was a genuine sense of joy, not just from Lianne and Derek, but from everyone present. This wasn’t a formal or distant occasion. It was warm, inclusive, and deeply personal. Light streamed through the large windows, illuminating the room and creating a beautiful, natural backdrop. It felt almost symbolic, as though the day itself was offering its blessing.
Throughout the ceremony, there were moments of shared laughter, quiet glances, and emotional connections that spoke louder than any words. These are the moments that define a wedding day. They can’t be planned or scripted. They simply happen, and they are always the most powerful.
When Lianne and Derek were finally pronounced husband and wife, the room erupted in applause. The smiles, the cheers, and the emotion in that moment were unforgettable. It was a true celebration of love and family.
Staircase Portraits
After the ceremony, we made our way to the grand staircase for bride and groom portraits. The Story offers some of the most beautiful architectural backdrops in the region, and this space never fails to impress. Lianne and Derek were completely at ease, enjoying a few quiet moments together away from the crowd. These portraits are often the first opportunity for a couple to truly pause and reflect on the fact that they are now married. The excitement, the relief, and the happiness all come together.
The Bubble Run
Next came one of the highlights of the day – the Bubble Run.
With many venues no longer allowing confetti, this joyful alternative has quickly become a favourite, and it’s easy to see why. Guests lined up, bubbles filled the air, and Lianne and Derek walked through a tunnel of laughter and celebration. It was light-hearted, fun, and incredibly photogenic. The atmosphere was filled with energy, and it brought everyone together in a wonderful shared moment.
The Formals
Formal portraits followed, bringing together family and friends in a series of timeless group photographs. These moments are so important. They capture connections, relationships, and memories that will only grow more meaningful with time. The final group photograph included every guest who had attended the wedding. There’s something incredibly special about these images. They represent not just a wedding day, but a community of people who care deeply about the couple.
As the photography continued, the relaxed and joyful atmosphere remained. Conversations flowed, laughter echoed across the space, and there was a genuine sense of happiness throughout.
Bride and Groom Portraits
Before leaving, we took some additional bride and groom portraits outside. First, in front of the beautiful blue Porsche that had made such a striking entrance earlier in the day. These images carried a sense of elegance and style, perfectly reflecting Lianne and Derek’s personalities.
We then moved onto The Story’s luscious lawn. The light was soft, the atmosphere calm, and it provided the perfect setting for a final series of portraits. These quieter moments often become some of the most cherished images. Away from the excitement and celebration, Lianne and Derek simply enjoyed being together. Their connection was effortless, natural, and full of warmth.
As the day drew toward the next chapter of celebrations, I took a moment to reflect on everything I had witnessed. Weddings like this are a reminder of why I love what I do. It’s about more than photographs. It’s about stories, emotions, and connections. It’s about capturing moments that will be treasured for generations.
