Sunshine, Staffies & Stunning Smiles: Simone and Anthony’s Wedding at The Story, Durham

As a wedding photographer, you get to witness a lot of special days—but some weddings just have that little extra sparkle. Simone and Anthony’s wedding at The Story in Durham was absolutely one of those magical days. With the sun shining, emotions flowing, and even a special guest on four legs, this wedding had everything I love about what I do: fun, family, and a fair bit of fabulousness.

Let me take you through the story (pun intended!) of this warm, love-filled day at one of my favourite venues in the North East.

Arrival at The Story – Sun, Smiles & Bobby the Dog

It was a gloriously sunny morning in Durham—one of those rare British days where the sky is a perfect blue, and everything seems to shine a bit brighter. I arrived early at The Story, a venue I know like the back of my hand and absolutely adore shooting at. The light here, the architecture, and the elegance of the building and the amazing staff always combine to make wedding photos truly timeless.

Anthony, looking incredibly relaxed and stylish, turned up in good time. He was accompanied by his best man Mark, his brother Gary and Gary’s wife Sue, and—stealing the spotlight immediately—their Staffie, Bobby. Yes, you heard right. A dog at a wedding. And not just any dog: Bobby was calm, photogenic, and honestly acted like he knew he was part of something special.

Also in attendance were Simone’s parents, and Anthony’s dad. With everyone looking sharp and the sun cooperating beautifully, I wasted no time getting some wonderful group shots on the steps outside The Story. Bobby included, of course.

The Bride’s Arrival – A Grand Entrance in a Silver Bentley

Simone made her arrival in serious style—a gleaming silver Bentley that added a real touch of elegance and drama to the morning. She was joined by her radiant bridal party: her bridesmaid Vanessa and her daughters Shayna and Channel. All three were beautifully dressed, full of smiles, and ready to support Simone on her big day.

One of the things I love most about weddings is those little moments before everything officially begins—the nervous laughter, the final dress adjustments, the whispered “You’ve got this!” Simone looked every inch the glowing bride. Confident, happy, and clearly in love.

Before the ceremony, we took some time to grab bridal party portraits on the steps and a few quiet, emotional images in the bridal prep room. Natural light poured into the room, adding a soft glow to the whole scene. These behind-the-scenes moments are always some of my favourites.

The Ceremony – Warm Weather, Warmer Emotions

The ceremony was held in The Story’s Durham Room—a space that, like the rest of the building, oozes charm and elegance. With soft, neutral décor and huge windows, the room was bathed in natural light. That said, it was a scorcher of a day, so it was very warm inside! But everyone bore the heat with grace (and a few subtle dabs of forehead with tissues), and the atmosphere was one of love, calm, and anticipation.

Anthony waited at the front, and as Simone walked down the aisle preceded by her daughters, there was hardly a dry eye in the house. The ceremony was heartfelt and deeply personal, with a special reading by Gary that added a touch of sentiment. Everyone smiled, laughed, and yes, shed a few tears.

And let’s be honest: Bobby stole the show once again, perfectly behaved and proudly sitting like he knew this moment mattered.

Post-Ceremony Portraits – Grand Staircase Magic

After the “I dos,” we made our way to The Story’s magnificent grand staircase for some portrait time. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again—this staircase is one of the best spots in the North East for dramatic, elegant, timeless wedding portraits. Add in a beautiful couple and a well-behaved Staffie, and you’ve got gold.

Simone and Anthony were an absolute dream to photograph. Comfortable in front of the camera, full of natural chemistry, and clearly enjoying every second together. The bridal party joined us for some photos on the main steps of the building, memories that I know will be treasured for years to come.

New for 2025: Drone Coverage on The Story Lawn

After the staircase portraits, we stepped outside to make use of The Story’s immaculate lawn—and to try out something new I’ve recently added to my photography packages: drone footage.

Yes, that’s right—I can now offer stunning aerial shots that bring a whole new perspective to wedding coverage. And what better venue to debut it than the gorgeous green space at The Story?

With the weather on our side, I launched the drone and captured some sweeping shots of the couple and their guests surrounded by the elegant geometry of the lawn and the architecture of the building. These aerial moments add so much cinematic flair to a wedding gallery, and I’m so excited to offer them as part of my service going forward. (I realise that I am new to the drone game and am no pro, but I learn quick!)

Onward to Copt Hill Inn – A Perfect Finish

With the formalities done and everyone full of post-ceremony joy, it was time to head to the reception venue—Copt Hill Inn, a beautiful spot with absolutely stunning views.

Now, I wasn’t staying for the full reception, but my job wasn’t quite finished yet. The setting at Copt Hill Inn is just too good to pass up, so I captured some final shots and a few more relaxed portraits with the rolling County Durhma scenery behind them.

Simone and Anthony’s friends and family were all in high spirits. The day had flowed effortlessly, and this final part of my coverage was the cherry on top.

Final Thoughts – Love, Laughter, and That Gorgeous Dog

Every wedding is different. Some are wild, others deeply emotional, and many—like Simone and Anthony’s—are the perfect blend of joy, beauty, and heartfelt connection. There was a real sense of closeness throughout the day. The love between the bride and groom was evident in every glance and every touch.

And while I could go on about the light, the weather, and the elegant décor at The Story, what really made this wedding special was the people—and Bobby, obviously!

Thank you, Simone and Anthony, for trusting me to capture your day. From Bentley arrivals and emotional readings to drone shots and sweeping hilltop views, it was a wedding I’ll never forget.
