Jenny and Michael’s Wedding Reception at Hallgarth Manor Hotel, Durham

Last night, I had the absolute pleasure of heading to the beautiful Hallgarth Manor Hotel, near Durham, to photograph the wedding reception of the newly married Jenny and Michael.

Their marriage had already begun in spectacular style, with the couple choosing the incredible city of New York as the setting for their wedding ceremony. There were apparently one or two unexpected hiccups during their American adventure, but I was given only a tantalising glimpse of the story—and that is as much as I am going to say! Whatever may or may not have happened across the Atlantic, Jenny and Michael were safely back in County Durham and ready to celebrate their marriage properly with their closest family and friends.

Hallgarth Manor was the perfect setting for the occasion. The wider Hallgarth site is thought to have ancient origins and may have once formed part of a medieval monastic manor and grange farm belonging to Durham Cathedral Priory. The present manor house is largely an 18th-century building, later altered and extended, and is protected as a Grade II-listed property. Its grand staircase, historic character and attractive gardens make it a wonderful location for wedding photography.

When I arrived, the hotel was already beginning to come alive. There was a real sense of anticipation as people prepared for the evening ahead, and it was immediately obvious that this was not going to be a quiet or uneventful wedding reception. There was excitement, laughter and just enough chaos to let me know I was in for a brilliant night.

A Very Special Dress Reveal

My photography began inside the manor house with an amazing dress reveal on Hallgarth Manor’s grand staircase.

Jenny looked absolutely sensational in her wedding dress, and the staircase provided a suitably dramatic backdrop for the moment her bridesmaids saw her fully dressed for the first time. The bridesmaids gathered at the bottom of the stairs while Jenny carefully made her way into position above them.

There is always something incredibly special about a dress reveal. Even when people believe they know what the dress looks like, seeing the bride wearing it—with her hair, make-up, jewellery and every finishing touch perfectly in place—is a completely different experience.

When Jenny’s bridesmaids finally turned around and looked up, their reactions were absolutely priceless. Their faces immediately filled with surprise, delight and emotion. There were huge smiles, excited voices and plenty of admiration as they took in the full effect.

Jenny stood proudly on the staircase, looking every inch the glamorous bride. It was a fantastic way to begin my coverage and produced some wonderful photographs before the main celebrations had even started.

A Dramatic Entrance into Sixty-One

While we were completing the dress reveal, the guests were shown through to the hotel’s adjoining function room, Sixty-One. The room was ready, the guests were seated, and everyone was eagerly awaiting the arrival of the wedding party.

Jenny and Michael were joined by the best man and bridesmaids as they prepared to make their grand entrance. This was never going to be a simple case of quietly walking into the room. The group entered in dramatic style, complete with white paper brollies that would become one of the biggest and most entertaining features of the entire evening.

The brollies added a fantastic sense of theatre to the entrance. They were waved, twirled and held proudly in the air as the wedding party made its way into the celebration. The guests responded with enthusiastic applause and cheers, immediately creating a lively atmosphere inside the room.

From a photographer’s point of view, entrances like this are great fun to capture. There is so much movement, expression and genuine excitement. Everyone is looking in different directions, people are laughing, and the bride and groom are right at the centre of it all.

The white brollies continued to make appearances throughout the evening. They became props for photographs, accessories for the dancing and important pieces of equipment for the general madness that followed!

Speeches Filled with Laughter and Love

Once everyone had settled into the room, it was time for the speeches.

First to speak was best man Mike, who delivered an absolutely hilarious speech. A good best man knows exactly how far he can push things, and Mike certainly appeared to have done his homework. His speech was filled with brilliant stories, perfectly timed jokes and plenty of affectionate teasing.

The room repeatedly erupted into laughter as Mike shared his memories and observations about Michael. Like all the best wedding speeches, it was funny without losing sight of the friendship and affection behind the humour.

Jenny’s dad spoke next, and the atmosphere naturally became more emotional. His speech was heartfelt, sincere and filled with love for his daughter. You could see just how much the occasion meant to him as he spoke about Jenny and welcomed Michael into the family.

There were smiles around the room, but there were also a few glistening eyes as his words touched everyone listening. It was a beautiful speech and a very proud moment for Jenny’s dad.

Finally, it was Michael’s turn.

I have photographed hundreds of weddings and listened to countless speeches over the years, but Michael’s was genuinely one of the most emotional I have ever heard.

He spoke openly and honestly about his love for Jenny, and there was no mistaking the depth of his feelings. This was not simply a speech delivered because tradition demanded it. Every word came directly from his heart.

Michael really, really loves Jenny.

You could hear it in his voice, see it in his expression and feel it throughout the room. Jenny listened as her new husband spoke so lovingly about her, and it was an incredibly powerful moment to photograph.

There are certain moments during weddings when the room seems to become completely still, and this was one of them. The laughter and noise briefly disappeared as everyone concentrated on Michael’s words. It was touching, honest and unforgettable.

Cake, Flowers and a Packed Dance Floor

After the speeches, the celebrations moved swiftly on to the cutting of the wedding cake.

Jenny and Michael stood together as their guests gathered around them, phones and cameras at the ready. The couple carefully cut into the cake to applause before posing for photographs together.

Next came the bouquet throw, which was anything but quiet and restrained!

Jenny took her position, turned her back on the waiting crowd and prepared to launch the bouquet. Behind her, the guests gathered with varying levels of determination. Some appeared genuinely eager to catch it, while others looked as though they were preparing to take evasive action.

The bouquet went flying through the air, followed by a lively scramble and plenty of laughter. Bouquet throws are always wonderfully unpredictable, and this one certainly did not disappoint.

The first dance followed, bringing another romantic moment for Jenny and Michael. They stepped onto the dance floor together as their guests watched from around the room.

It was not long, however, before the dance floor began to fill.

Once the music picked up, everyone was ready to celebrate. The floor quickly became packed with guests dancing, singing and thoroughly enjoying themselves. After the emotion of the speeches and first dance, it felt as though the entire room had been given permission to let loose.

One person who needed absolutely no encouragement was Jenny and Michael’s young son, Eden.

Eden absolutely loved the dancing and quickly established himself as one of the stars of the evening. His enthusiasm was infectious, particularly when ABBA’s legendary “Dancing Queen” began playing.

He danced with complete freedom, confidence and joy, making everyone around him smile. There is something wonderful about watching children enjoy wedding receptions. They do not worry about whether anyone is watching or whether their dance moves are technically correct—they simply hear the music and go for it.

Eden’s performance became even more memorable thanks to his inflatable pink flamingo. The flamingo joined him on the dance floor and instantly became one of the evening’s most important guests.

Together, Eden and his pink companion commanded the floor. It was joyful, hilarious and completely natural—the exact kind of moment that makes wedding photography so rewarding.

Brollies, Flamingos and Outdoor Shenanigans

After plenty of energetic dancing, the celebrations spilled outside and onto the lawn.

I was joined by content creator Amber of @kapture_byamberlevi, and we set about capturing the fun and general shenanigans taking place outside.

By this point, the white paper brollies had returned in force. They were being spun, waved and used in all manner of creative ways as everyone gathered for photographs. Alongside the inflatable flamingo, they helped to give the evening its own wonderfully distinctive character.

The atmosphere outside was relaxed, playful and full of laughter. Formality had disappeared completely, and everyone was simply enjoying themselves.

Of course, no account of the outdoor celebrations would be complete without mentioning Tony, who proudly held the highly prestigious title of the “Bride’s Bitch.”

Tony became one of the undisputed stars of the show when he decided to demonstrate his twerking abilities on the lawn. There are some things you simply cannot prepare for as a wedding photographer, and Tony’s performance was certainly one of them!

He threw himself wholeheartedly into the moment, much to the delight—and possibly the disbelief—of everyone watching. The resulting photographs perfectly captured the humour and wonderfully uninhibited spirit of the evening.

It was absolute chaos in the very best possible way.

These are often the moments couples love looking back on most. The romantic portraits and traditional photographs are incredibly important, but the pictures of friends being ridiculous, relatives laughing uncontrollably and inflatable flamingos appearing in unexpected places help tell the full story of the celebration.

One Final Photograph on the Staircase

After the madness outside, Jenny and I headed back into the manor house.

Earlier in the evening, Jenny had told me about a very particular photograph she wanted to create on Hallgarth Manor’s staircase. We had already used the staircase for the emotional bridesmaids’ dress reveal, but this photograph was going to be something very different and very special.

We took our time arranging the shot and making sure everything was exactly right. The staircase is one of the manor’s most striking features, and Jenny looked absolutely incredible against its elegant surroundings.

Some images require a little more thought and preparation, but when everything comes together, the results are worth it.

I am delighted to say that the photograph came out fantastically well.

It was exactly the kind of dramatic, memorable image Jenny had hoped for, and it provided the perfect final portrait of the evening. I always enjoy helping couples bring their own photographic ideas to life, particularly when the location provides such a beautiful backdrop.

The Perfect End to a Brilliant Evening

At approximately 9pm, the evening food was served.

After several hours of photographing emotional speeches, packed dance floors, flying bouquets, white brollies, inflatable flamingos and Tony’s unforgettable twerking display, I was certainly ready for something to eat.

A gorgeous hot beef bun was exactly what I needed. It was warm, delicious and greatly appreciated after such a busy evening.

With my work complete, I packed away my cameras, said my goodbyes and headed home—tired, well-fed and extremely happy with everything I had captured.

Jenny and Michael’s wedding reception was filled with all the ingredients that make a celebration memorable. There was genuine emotion, brilliant humour, wonderful speeches and a dance floor that remained full of life.

Most importantly, the evening was centred around a couple who are clearly completely devoted to one another.

Jenny and Michael may have chosen New York for their wedding ceremony, but their celebration back home in County Durham was equally unforgettable. Hallgarth Manor provided a beautiful and historic backdrop, while their family and friends supplied the laughter, energy and occasional twerking.
