Surbhi & Dale's Wedding Celebrations at Blackwell Grange Hotel, Darlington
Some weddings are beautiful, some are unforgettable, and then there are weddings like Surbhi and Dale's, where two rich traditions come together to create something truly extraordinary. Today I had the absolute privilege of photographing not one, but two spectacular wedding ceremonies at the stunning Blackwell Grange Hotel in Darlington. The day began with a traditional British wedding ceremony before moving into a vibrant and deeply meaningful Hindu Vivaha ceremony, giving family and friends the opportunity to celebrate two cultures, two traditions and one incredible love story.
Blackwell Grange Hotel provided the perfect setting for such a remarkable occasion. Steeped in history, the elegant Grade II* listed country house dates back to the early 18th century and was built for the renowned Darlington industrialist George Allan around 1710. Over the centuries it has been home to influential families before being transformed into the beautiful hotel we know today, blending historic Georgian architecture with modern luxury while retaining its timeless charm. Set within acres of picturesque parkland on the edge of Darlington, it is one of the North East's most prestigious wedding venues and an ideal backdrop for a celebration as special as Surbhi and Dale's.
As I arrived at Blackwell Grange, there was a real sense of excitement in the air. Guests from both families were beginning to gather, dressed in everything from elegant British wedding attire to breathtaking traditional Indian clothing, creating a wonderful splash of colour throughout the venue. Everyone knew they were about to witness something incredibly special, and I couldn't wait to document every moment.
The first ceremony would celebrate the couple's marriage in the traditional British style before the celebrations transformed into a spectacular Hindu wedding filled with ancient rituals, colour, music and symbolism. It was a day that perfectly reflected Surbhi and Dale themselves – bringing together two families, two cultures and countless memories that will last a lifetime.
I made my way straight to Surbhi's bridal suite to begin photographing the morning preparations. Situated just off the hotel's magnificent Grand Staircase, the room was elegant, peaceful and filled with a wonderful sense of calm anticipation. Despite the excitement of the day ahead, everyone was relaxed and enjoying every moment.
Joining Surbhi were Dale's sister Becky, Shona, Dale's mum Denise, sister-in-law Teena and her 6 week old son Simba, Flossie and Surbhi's auntie, all chatting happily as the finishing touches were put in place. Makeup artists Shanice and Lucy were hard at work, expertly creating beautiful, natural bridal looks, while Rebecca concentrated on styling everyone's hair. There was a lovely atmosphere in the room, with laughter flowing freely alongside conversations about the incredible day that lay ahead.
From the moment I arrived at Blackwell Grange, there was one little person who was destined to steal everyone's hearts. Little Flossie, the flower girl, was an absolute superstar from the very start of the bridal preparations. Full of personality, confidence and endless smiles, she brought so much joy to every room she walked into. Whether she was watching the makeup artists at work, admiring Surbhi's beautiful dresses or simply enjoying all the excitement around her, she was a constant source of laughter and wonderful natural photographs.
As the day unfolded, Flossie continued to be one of the stars of the wedding. She embraced every moment with infectious enthusiasm, happily greeting family members, dancing whenever the opportunity arose and lighting up every photograph she appeared in. By the evening celebrations she was completely in her element on the dance floor, joining in with the fun as though she'd been attending weddings all her life.
Every wedding has those people who leave a lasting impression, and despite being one of the smallest guests, little Flossie undoubtedly became one of the biggest stars of Surbhi and Dale's incredible day.
The first wedding of the day was to be a traditional English ceremony, so Surbhi would be wearing a breathtaking white wedding gown. The dress was beautifully finished with delicate lace detailing and suited her perfectly. Her long dark hair was left flowing naturally, completing a timeless and elegant bridal look. As always, it's wonderful to watch a bride's transformation during the morning, and Surbhi was absolutely radiant.
The original plan had been to hold the ceremony outdoors in the beautiful grounds of Blackwell Grange. Unfortunately, the British weather had other ideas. As the rain began to fall, the decision was made to move everything inside. While an outdoor ceremony is always lovely, Blackwell Grange has some stunning indoor ceremony rooms, and the change of plan certainly didn't dampen anyone's spirits.
As Surbhi and the bridal party disappeared to get into their dresses, I took the opportunity to head to the Carriage House and catch up with Dale and the gentlemen. Waiting calmly for the day to begin were Dale, his dad Shaun, best men Andy and Alex, and groomsman Ryan. The atmosphere couldn't have been more different from upstairs—less hairspray and makeup, more laughter and gentle banter! After photographing buttonholes being fastened, jackets adjusted and a few relaxed portraits, everyone was ready.
Before heading back upstairs, I made a slight detour to photograph guests as they began arriving at the hotel. There is always something special about this part of the day. Family members greeting one another with warm hugs, friends catching up, children excitedly looking around the venue, and everyone dressed in their wedding best. There was a genuine buzz of anticipation as guests took their seats ready for the ceremony.
Returning to Surbhi's suite, I found the transformation complete. She looked absolutely incredible. The dress fitted perfectly, her bouquet complemented the elegant styling beautifully, and there was an unmistakable sparkle in her eyes as the reality of the day finally began to sink in. We spent a few minutes capturing some beautiful bridal portraits in the suite before it was time to make our way downstairs.
The ceremony itself was simply wonderful. Family and friends watched proudly as Surbhi made her entrance before exchanging vows with Dale in an emotional and heartfelt service. One particularly touching moment was the candle ceremony, symbolising the joining together of two lives and two families. There were smiles throughout, a few happy tears, plenty of laughter and, above all else, an overwhelming sense of love. It was a beautiful beginning to what was proving to be a truly remarkable day.
Following the ceremony, everyone gathered on the magnificent Grand Staircase for a full group photograph. It's one of Blackwell Grange's most iconic features and provided the perfect backdrop for such a memorable image.
Normally, after a ceremony, it's time for confetti, drinks and relaxed celebrations. Not today! This wedding was unlike any other. There was a quick turnaround as Surbhi, Dale and both families disappeared to change into their stunning traditional Indian wedding attire in preparation for the second ceremony of the day. White dresses and morning suits would soon give way to vibrant colours, intricate embroidery and centuries of Hindu tradition.
Meanwhile, the men were back in the Carriage House, getting ready for the next part of the celebrations. The day was only just getting started, and I couldn't wait to witness and photograph everything that was still to come.
After a short break of around an hour, Blackwell Grange was transformed. Guests began to reappear, no longer dressed in the elegant suits and dresses of the earlier English ceremony but in an explosion of colour unlike anything you could imagine. Rich reds, vibrant greens, shimmering golds, deep blues and intricate embroidery filled every corner of the room. It was as though the entire hotel had come to life, and the atmosphere had changed completely. The excitement was palpable as everyone took their seats in anticipation of the second ceremony of the day.
Before joining the guests, I made my way back upstairs to Surbhi's suite, and I genuinely wasn't prepared for what I was about to see.
"Oh my goodness."
That was my first thought.
Only an hour earlier, Surbhi had looked every inch the elegant English bride in her beautiful white lace wedding dress. Now she stood before me looking absolutely exquisite in traditional Indian bridal attire. She wore a magnificent deep red lehenga adorned with intricate gold embroidery that shimmered beautifully in the light. Around her neck sat an ornate gold necklace, perfectly matched by elegant earrings and other traditional jewellery. A stunning green, jewel-encrusted bindi adorned her forehead, while her wrists were decorated with countless traditional red bridal bangles, known as chooda, symbolising prosperity, happiness and a long married life. Every detail had been carefully chosen, and together they created one of the most breathtaking bridal looks I have ever photographed.
Naturally, we couldn't head straight downstairs without taking a few portraits. The bridal suite provided a beautiful backdrop, but I also wanted to take advantage of the spectacular landing outside. Standing beneath Blackwell Grange's magnificent chandelier, Surbhi looked every bit the princess. The soft light reflected perfectly from the gold detailing of her outfit, creating photographs that I know will become treasured memories for years to come.
Soon it was time to make our way downstairs for the Hindu wedding ceremony.
The ceremony room itself had been transformed. At the front stood a beautifully decorated stage, known as the mandap, which represents the sacred home the couple will build together during their married life. Seated on the immaculate stage were Dale's mum and dad alongside Surbhi's brother Rohit and his wife Teena, ready to play important roles in the ceremony. Moments later Dale made his entrance, now wearing traditional Indian wedding attire himself, looking incredibly smart and completely embracing the culture and traditions of the day.
Then the ceremony began.
I can honestly say it was one of the most fascinating and beautiful ceremonies I have ever witnessed.
A traditional Hindu wedding, known as a Vivaha, is far more than simply exchanging vows. Every ritual carries centuries of meaning, with each blessing symbolising love, commitment, prosperity, respect and the joining together of not only two people but two entire families. Throughout the ceremony the priest guided Surbhi and Dale through a series of sacred rituals, prayers and blessings. There were symbolic offerings, the exchange of floral garlands, blessings from family members and the lighting of the sacred fire, known as Agni, which serves as a divine witness to the marriage.
One of the most significant moments came as the couple took the Phere, or Seven Steps, together around the sacred fire. Each step represents a promise they make to one another, including providing for their family, supporting one another through life's challenges, remaining faithful and building a happy and prosperous future together. It is regarded as one of the most important parts of a Hindu marriage ceremony and was a truly moving moment to witness.
Throughout the ceremony there were smiles, moments of quiet reflection and wonderful interactions between both families. Although all of the rituals were unfamiliar to me before I began photographing this Hindu wedding, the meaning behind them was universal—love, family, respect and lifelong commitment.
I feel genuinely privileged and incredibly humbled to be welcomed into ceremonies like this. Being trusted to photograph such important cultural traditions is something I never take for granted. Every wedding teaches me something new, and every family I meet enriches my understanding of the beautiful diversity that exists within wedding celebrations. It is one of the many reasons I absolutely love being a wedding photographer.
Once the ceremony had concluded, everyone gathered on the stage for formal family photographs. With so many colourful outfits together in one place, the photographs were simply spectacular. Afterwards, I took Surbhi and Dale around several carefully chosen locations within Blackwell Grange to create a series of relaxed bridal portraits. With the elegant interiors and the hotel's timeless architecture, every location perfectly complemented their stunning traditional attire, providing the perfect conclusion to an unforgettable afternoon.
But the day was far from over.
After the Hindu ceremony had concluded, the formal photographs finished and the celebrations continued.
Immediately after the ceremony, everyone gathered outside for a joyful confetti run. Surrounded by cheers, laughter and a colourful shower of confetti, the newlyweds made their way through their guests before everyone came together for a fantastic group photograph in front of the beautiful wedding gazebo.
I then spent the next hour capturing guests chatting, laughing and enjoying each other's company. It was wonderful to see both families so completely at ease together. Although they came from different backgrounds and traditions, there was an overwhelming feeling that everyone had become one big family. Conversations flowed effortlessly, children played happily, and everywhere I looked there were smiles. These are often my favourite moments to photograph because they are completely natural and full of genuine emotion.
Before long it was time for the wedding breakfast, and I was delighted that Surbhi and Dale had invited me to join them and their guests. I always consider it a real privilege when couples ask me to be part of their celebrations rather than simply documenting them from the sidelines. It's a lovely opportunity to experience the atmosphere with the guests while, of course, never being too far away from the camera.
Before everyone took their seats, the guests were treated to some entertainment from a talented close-up magician, Luke Howells. One particular trick involving Surbhi and Dale left the couple speechless. Gasps quickly turned into laughter and applause as everyone tried to work out exactly how he had performed the tricks. Even standing only a few feet away with my camera, I hadn't the faintest idea! It was one of those magical moments—quite literally—that had everyone talking long after the tricks had finished.
Soon afterwards, Surbhi and Dale made their entrance to warm applause before Dale welcomed everyone with a heartfelt speech. He spoke beautifully about love, family and friendship, thanking everyone who had travelled near and far to celebrate such an important day with them. His words perfectly reflected everything that had happened throughout the celebrations. This wasn't simply a wedding; it was the joining together of two families, two cultures and countless friendships.
With the formalities complete came the words everyone had been waiting for.
"The buffet is now open!"
Tables were invited one at a time to enjoy the feast, and as each group returned to their seats carrying beautifully filled plates, I found myself becoming increasingly hungry. Eventually it was my turn, and I have to admit I had been looking forward to this all day.
I absolutely love Indian food, and one thing I've learned from photographing Indian weddings is that the food is always exceptional. Today's buffet certainly didn't disappoint. There were three delicious vegetarian curries, each packed with flavour and beautifully prepared. I couldn't resist trying all three, accompanied by fragrant rice and, best of all, a warm garlic and cheese naan—without doubt my favourite. If I had to choose a standout dish, it would have to be the spinach and paneer curry. Rich, creamy and perfectly spiced, it was absolutely delicious. It was one of those meals that makes you wish you had room to go back for seconds!
In many weddings, the meal is followed by a quieter period while guests relax and let their food settle. Not this wedding!
The entertainment continued throughout the afternoon. The magician carried on amazing guests from table to table with more mind-bending illusions, leaving everyone scratching their heads and laughing in equal measure. Meanwhile, a caricature artist, Barrie James, was busy creating wonderfully exaggerated portraits of guests, much to everyone's amusement. Every few minutes another drawing would be revealed, followed by roars of laughter as family and friends recognised the familiar faces staring back at them.
It was the perfect way to keep the celebrations alive. Everywhere I looked there was something happening, another smile to capture, another laugh to photograph or another special moment unfolding naturally. It was yet another reminder that this wasn't just a wedding—it was a celebration of family, friendship and two wonderful cultures coming together in the most unforgettable way.
As the afternoon celebrations drew to a close and the magician and caricature artist took their well-deserved bows, it was time for another of those classic wedding moments that everyone loves – the cutting of the cake.
Family and friends gathered around as Surbhi and Dale stood proudly beside their beautiful wedding cake. With huge smiles on their faces and plenty of encouragement from the guests, they cut the first slice together to a round of applause. It was a lovely moment and the perfect transition into the evening celebrations.
No sooner had the cake been cut than the dance floor was cleared for Surbhi and Dale's first dance as husband and wife. The room fell silent as they took to the floor together, completely absorbed in the moment. It was romantic, elegant and a wonderful way to begin the evening's entertainment.
Halfway through the dance, the DJ invited family and friends to join the happy couple on the dance floor. There wasn't the slightest hesitation. Within seconds the floor was full of people celebrating together, and from that moment onwards it never really emptied.
As the evening progressed, the music evolved. The familiar pop classics that had everyone singing along gradually gave way to the infectious rhythms of Bhangra music, and that's when the celebrations reached another level altogether. The atmosphere became electric. Guests formed circles, clapped in time with the music and filled the dance floor with incredible energy. There were graceful spins, fast footwork, hands raised high in celebration and seemingly endless smiles. Watching everyone dancing together with such enthusiasm was an absolute joy, and from a photographer's point of view it was a dream to capture. Every direction I looked presented another wonderful photograph full of colour, movement and pure happiness.
Eventually the evening drew towards its conclusion, but there was still one final photograph to capture.
Outside, guests gathered around Surbhi and Dale, each holding a sparkling sparkler that illuminated the warm summer evening. As hundreds of tiny lights flickered around the newlyweds, they stood together surrounded by the people who mean the most to them. It was a magical scene and the perfect way to end an unforgettable day.
With my cameras finally packed away, I made my way around the room saying my goodbyes to everyone. I thought my work for the day was done...
Then it happened!
"What happened?" I hear you ask.
Surbhi's cousin, Shashank, wasn't going to let me leave without becoming part of the celebrations myself. Before I knew it, he had taken me by the hand and led me straight onto the dance floor to teach me a few traditional Indian dance moves!
Now, it's fair to say I felt far more comfortable with a camera in my hands than dancing in front of wedding guests! Shashank did his very best to guide me as I attempted to copy his moves. Whether I actually managed them is another matter entirely!
The laughter, encouragement and sheer warmth shown by everyone perfectly summed up the last three days. From the Mehndi Ceremony to the Haldi Ceremony and finally this incredible wedding day, Surbhi, Dale and both of their families made me feel less like a photographer and more like one of the guests.
I won't be giving up my day job anytime soon—wedding photography is definitely a safer career than Indian dancing—but I will treasure those memories forever. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for allowing me to be part of such an extraordinary celebration. It has been an honour.
I left Blackwell Grange feeling physically tired after a long day but incredibly happy and genuinely privileged to have been invited to photograph such an extraordinary wedding.
I would also like to pay tribute to the wonderful team at Blackwell Grange Hotel. The venue itself is a superb place to get married, combining elegant surroundings with beautiful grounds and exceptional facilities. However, what really makes a wedding run so effortlessly is the people behind the scenes.
A special mention has to go to Samantha and Josh, whose organisation throughout the day was absolutely first class. From quietly solving problems before they even became noticeable to ensuring every part of the day ran seamlessly, they were the very definition of professionalism. Friendly, approachable, calm under pressure and always one step ahead, they worked tirelessly to make sure Surbhi and Dale's wedding unfolded exactly as it should. As a wedding photographer, working alongside coordinators like Samantha and Josh makes an enormous difference, and I sincerely hope our paths cross many more times in the future.
Thank you, Surbhi and Dale, for allowing me to document one of the most colourful, joyful and culturally rich weddings I have ever had the privilege of photographing. It is a wedding I will remember for many years to come.
As I drove home that evening, I realised I was taking away far more than thousands of photographs and wonderful memories. Over the course of the Mehndi Ceremony, the Haldi Ceremony and this incredible wedding day, I had been welcomed into Surbhi and Dale's family with a kindness and generosity that I will never forget. What began as a wedding booking ended with something far more special. I genuinely feel that I have made true friends in Surbhi, Dale, Denise, Shaun, Becky, Shona, Rohit, Teena, Auntie, Mohit, Shashank and so many other wonderful members of both families. Thank you all for opening your hearts, your homes and your traditions to me, for making me feel so welcome, and for allowing me to capture moments that I will treasure just as much as I hope you will. I wish every one of you a lifetime of health, happiness and love, and I sincerely hope our paths cross again in the future.
Oh, and Shashank… thank you for the wonderful onion bhajis, pakoras and chai. They were absolutely delicious! I have a feeling I'll be back!
