Nicole & Josh’s Wedding at the Newly Refurbished Hallgarth Hall – A Secret Garden Ceremony, Sunshine, and a Four-Legged Ring Bearer
If you’ve ever wanted a wedding day that’s full of warmth, laughter, and a few surprises, Nicole & Josh’s celebration at the newly refurbished Hallgarth Hall, just outside Darlington, is the perfect example. This wasn’t just another wedding in my diary — it was a day packed with personality, heart, and those little moments that stick in your memory long after the last dance.
Hallgarth Hall – A Fresh Start for a Beloved Venue
Hallgarth Hall has been part of the North East wedding scene for decades. Before the refurbishment, it had the charm of an old friend — comfortable and familiar — but it was clear it was ready for a new chapter.
Now? That chapter has arrived, and it’s a stunner.
The refurbishment has transformed the venue into a space that feels fresh, elegant, and versatile. Whether you’re going for a sleek, modern wedding style or something more traditional, the neutral colour palette, tasteful décor, and stylish lighting make it the perfect blank canvas.
When I first stepped inside, the difference was immediate:
Improved natural light in key rooms — a game-changer for photos.
The Secret Garden ceremony space, tucked away and surrounded by lush greenery, feels like a hidden world.
Refurbished outdoor terraces that connect seamlessly to the reception spaces, perfect for mingling.
Immaculate lawns that look straight out of a stately home photoshoot.
And here’s a practical detail I know couples will love — the large, on-site car park. No winding country lanes or long walks in wedding shoes. Guests can park just steps from the entrance, making arrivals stress-free.
It’s one of those venues where you can tell the refurbishment was done with weddings in mind — every space feels intentional, and every corner is photogenic.
Bridal Prep – All Go from the Start
When I arrived on the morning of the wedding, the weather wasn’t quite living up to its sunny promise. Grey skies and a brisk wind greeted me — the kind of day that makes you keep your weather apps open just in case.
Inside, though, it was a different story entirely.
Nicole’s bridal suite was buzzing with activity in the best possible way. Bridesmaids in matching robes moved between hair and make-up chairs, laughter ricocheted around the room, and every so often someone would shout “Where’s the fizz?” only for another glass to appear moments later.
I wasn’t working alone either — I had the pleasure of teaming up with my good friends Peter and Simon from Perfect Day Wedding Video - www.perfectdaypro.co.uk. We’ve worked together many times over the years, and it’s always a joy. We know how each other works, we keep things relaxed for the couple, and we make sure we don’t get in each other’s way while still capturing everything from every angle.
Mums and grans were happily chatting in one corner, occasionally stopping to watch Nicole with that unmistakable look of pride. Her dress was hanging beautifully in the corner, catching the light from the window, while shoes and jewellery were carefully arranged for photographs.
The Will-It-or-Won’t-It Weather Question
By mid-morning, the big question of the day had shifted to where the ceremony would take place. The plan was for the Secret Garden, but the wind had everyone on edge.
The Hallgarth team were keeping a close eye on the forecast, offering little updates like sports commentators: “Still looking okay for now… we’ll decide in 20 minutes.”
Finally, just before 1pm, the decision was made — we’re going ahead outside.
A Pre-Ceremony Mishap
As guests began to make their way along the garden paths, taking in the greenery and finding their seats, the day’s first unexpected moment occurred. Josh’s mum had a fall on her way into the ceremony space. Venue staff and family were at her side instantly, helping her to a chair and fetching an ice pack. She was comfortable and able to watch the ceremony, and the rest of the day’s plans carried on while arrangements were made to ensure she was looked after. Later, it was confirmed to be a clean break to her lower leg.
The Ceremony – Love, Laughter, and a Ring-Bearing Dog
Nicole’s entrance was a real moment. Her dress flowed beautifully, the veil lifting slightly in the breeze — just enough to give that picture-perfect, almost cinematic look.
Then came the scene-stealer: Connor the dog. Wearing a special collar with the wedding rings secured, he trotted confidently down the aisle, tail wagging, delivering them exactly on cue. The reaction from guests was unanimous — gasps, laughter, and a collective “aww.”
The ceremony was a lovely mix of heartfelt vows, gentle humour, and that easy connection you see between two people who truly get each other. Outdoor ceremonies always carry an extra layer of atmosphere, and the Secret Garden delivered it in spades.
Drinks Reception – Cue the Sunshine
As Nicole and Josh walked back up the aisle as husband and wife, the timing couldn’t have been more perfect — the clouds broke and sunshine flooded the garden.
Trays of prosecco and bottled beers began to circulate, guests mingled freely, and the lawn became a sea of chatter, hugs, and laughter. Connor worked his way from group to group, collecting pats and attention.
Formal Group Photos – Hallgarth’s Lawn at Its Best
Hallgarth’s lawn is the kind of backdrop photographers dream about — level, vibrant, and naturally framed.
We worked through the essentials efficiently, keeping it light and fun so guests could get back to the celebrations:
Big family groups
Parents with the couple
Bridesmaids and groomsmen in classic poses
A couple of sillier set-ups for the friends
The bridesmaids nailed their pose, while the groomsmen insisted on at least one mock-serious “album cover” shot.
The Wedding Breakfast – A Feast
The wedding breakfast was nothing short of superb. The three-course menu was served piping hot, beautifully presented, and clearly enjoyed by all. From my spot, I could see guests leaning back after dessert with that satisfied “I couldn’t eat another bite” look.
The reception room itself had been styled perfectly — crisp linens, elegant centrepieces, and the warm glow of the refurbished lighting.
Speeches – Perfectly Balanced
After the meal, it was time for speeches.
Josh kicked things off with heartfelt thanks, making sure to acknowledge both families and everyone who had played a role in the day.
Craig, Nicole’s dad, followed with a warm, emotional speech full of personal memories and fatherly pride.
Jacob, the best man, rounded things off with a speech that was light, funny, and family-friendly — a rare and commendable feat for Jacob.
Golden Hour Portraits – Just the Two of Them
After the formalities, I stole Nicole and Josh away for a short portrait session. The sun was low, casting a golden glow over the grounds.
We explored the Halls grounds and grabbed a handful of amazing shots. These were moments where they could simply be themselves, away from the crowd, and it showed in the photos.
Evening Reception – Cake, Dancing, and Energy
With evening guests arriving, the cake cutting marked the start of the night’s celebrations.
Nicole and Josh’s first dance was followed quickly by a packed dancefloor — and it stayed that way. Nicole’s dance with her dad was a beautiful moment before the evening became a full-throttle party.

Behind the Lens – My Photographer’s Take
Hallgarth Hall’s refurbishment has made it a joy to photograph. The consistent lighting, photogenic ceremony spaces, and flexible layout mean I can move easily between candid coverage and classic portraiture.
For Nicole & Josh’s wedding, I blended documentary-style storytelling with more structured images to create a complete visual narrative of their day. The Secret Garden was ideal for natural light, and the golden hour portraits were a personal highlight.
