Why I’m Putting My Wedding Photography Prices Up

I’ve made a decision about the future of my wedding photography business.

I’m putting my prices up.

That might sound like a strange thing to announce when the wedding photography market is incredibly competitive, but actually, that is precisely why I’m doing it.

For too long, I’ve watched photographers competing to see who can offer the cheapest full-day wedding package. Prices seem to be getting lower and lower, with some people offering an entire day’s photography for amounts that simply don’t reflect the work, experience, equipment, editing time and responsibility involved.

I realised something important.

Trying to compete with ridiculously low prices is crazy.

There will always be somebody prepared to photograph a wedding for less. If I reduce my prices to compete with them, somebody else will simply go lower again. That becomes a race to the bottom, and it is a race I have absolutely no interest in winning.

Instead, I want to compete on something completely different.

Quality.

Wedding photography isn’t just about owning an expensive camera and turning up on the day.

It is about experience.

It is about understanding light, composition, timing and people. It is knowing when something important is about to happen before it happens. It is being able to organise a group photograph quickly while keeping everybody relaxed. It is knowing how to work in bright sunshine, pouring rain, dark churches, difficult reception rooms and constantly changing situations.

Most importantly, it is about being trusted with photographs that can never be taken again.

There are no second chances at a wedding.

You cannot ask the bride to walk down the aisle again because you missed the photograph. You cannot repeat the groom’s reaction when he sees his partner for the first time. You cannot recreate a tearful hug from a parent, a spontaneous laugh during the speeches or that wonderful expression from a grandparent.

That responsibility has enormous value.

I Have Nothing to Prove by Being the Cheapest

Over the years, my photography has been recognised through awards, professional recognition and, most importantly, feedback from the couples whose weddings I have photographed.

That tells me something.

I don’t need to sell myself as the cheap option.

My work should be judged by the quality of the photographs I produce, the service I provide and the experience couples receive from the moment they first contact me until their finished wedding photographs are delivered.

I want couples to book me because they have looked through my work and thought:

“That is how I want my wedding remembered.”

Not simply because I happened to be £100 cheaper than somebody else.

Moving Towards the Luxury Wedding Market

This also marks a change in how I want my business to be seen.

I am deliberately moving towards the premium and luxury wedding photography market.

Luxury doesn’t mean being pretentious, and it certainly doesn’t mean changing the relaxed way I work with couples.

For me, luxury means exceptional service.

It means beautifully created photographs, attention to detail, professional editing, carefully designed albums and prints, reliability, experience and giving each wedding the time and attention it deserves.

It also means not trying to photograph an unsustainable number of weddings simply to make low prices work.

I would rather photograph fewer weddings and give every couple an outstanding experience.

Your Wedding Photographs Become More Valuable With Time

After the flowers have gone, the cake has been eaten, the suits have been returned and the honeymoon is over, your photographs remain.

And strangely, they often become more important as the years pass.

People change. Families grow. Sadly, some of the people in your wedding photographs may no longer be with you in years to come.

Suddenly, that photograph of Mum laughing, Dad giving his speech or grandparents standing proudly beside you becomes priceless.

That is why choosing your wedding photographer should never simply be about finding the cheapest quote.

A New Direction

So yes, my wedding photography prices are increasing.

I’m comfortable with that decision because I know what I provide.

I know the work that goes into every wedding, both on the day and afterwards. I know the experience I bring. I know the standards I set myself.

And I know the quality of the finished photographs.

There will always be cheaper wedding photographers.

I’m no longer trying to compete with them.

My aim is to work with couples who value photography, appreciate quality and want their wedding captured by an experienced professional they can trust.

Because when something matters as much as your wedding memories, choosing the photographer you genuinely love should matter far more than choosing the photographer with the lowest price.

My future isn’t about being the cheapest wedding photographer.

It’s about being one of the best choices you can make.
