Sara & Malcolm’s Wedding at The Story Durham & Bishop Auckland Rugby Club
16th May | The Story Durham
There are some wedding days that just flow effortlessly from start to finish. The kind of day where the weather behaves itself, the venue looks incredible, the guests arrive full of excitement and laughter, and every moment seems to unfold naturally in front of the camera. Sara and Malcolm’s wedding at The Story Durham on the 16th May was exactly that kind of day.
From the moment I arrived at 2.30pm, there was already a brilliant atmosphere building. The sunshine was pouring down over Durham, guests were beginning to arrive in their finery, and there was that unmistakable buzz that only comes with a wedding day. You could feel straight away that this was going to be a celebration filled with love, family, fun and genuine emotion.
Arriving at The Story Durham
The Story is one of those venues that always photographs beautifully. No matter the weather, no matter the season, it has such a stylish and welcoming feel about it. The classic architecture mixed with the grand staircase and elegant interiors creates the perfect backdrop for wedding photography. Add in glorious sunshine and a happy wedding party, and you have everything you need for an unforgettable afternoon.
I always like to arrive early enough to capture the build-up to the ceremony. Those moments before everything officially begins are often some of the most relaxed and authentic parts of the day. Guests are greeting one another, nerves are beginning to kick in, and there’s excitement in the air.
Malcolm arrived looking smart and calm, though I’m sure there were plenty of nerves hidden beneath the surface. One of the highlights straight away was photographing Malcolm with his son Jack, who looked absolutely incredible in his miniature suit matching his dad’s. Seeing little ones dressed up for weddings is always brilliant, but Jack completely stole the show for a while.
There’s something incredibly special about those father-and-son moments on a wedding day. Jack looked so proud standing beside his dad, and you could already tell how important family was going to be throughout the entire celebration. We managed to capture some lovely relaxed portraits outside in the sunshine before the guests really started to fill the venue.
With the weather being so lovely, everyone naturally gravitated outdoors. Guests chatted and laughed in the warm afternoon sun, creating loads of natural candid opportunities. These are the kinds of moments I love photographing most — genuine smiles, people reconnecting, hugs, laughter and anticipation. Wedding photography isn’t just about posed portraits; it’s about telling the complete story of the day.
Sara’s Arrival
At around 2.50pm, all eyes turned toward Sara’s arrival.
And wow… Sara looked absolutely stunning.
She arrived with her bridesmaids, daughters Lexi and Carla, Maid of Honour Kelsie, and proud dad Keith. There’s always a moment when a bride steps out of the car and the atmosphere instantly changes. Conversations pause, guests smile, and suddenly the reality of the day truly hits everyone.
Sara looked elegant, radiant and completely ready for the day ahead. The sunshine lit up the front steps beautifully, giving us the perfect opportunity for some photographs before heading inside. Everyone was smiling, laughing and enjoying the moment together, which made the photographs feel incredibly natural and relaxed.
One thing I always say is that wedding photography works best when couples simply enjoy their day and trust the process. Sara and Malcolm did exactly that from start to finish. Nothing felt rushed or forced. They were just completely present in the moment, and that always shines through in the photographs.
We spent a little time on the steps outside capturing portraits with the bridal party before heading inside to the Bridal Suite for some additional portraits of Sara. The light inside The Story is always fantastic, and it gave us a beautiful setting for some elegant bridal photographs.
Sara looked genuinely happy and relaxed, surrounded by the people closest to her. Her daughters Lexi and Carla were fantastic throughout the day and clearly so proud to be part of such a special occasion. Those little interactions between family members are often some of my favourite photographs from a wedding because they hold so much meaning years later.
The Ceremony
At 3pm, it was time for the ceremony.
And as always at The Story, it was absolutely brilliant.
The Oswald Suite at The Story has such a fantastic atmosphere. It feels intimate and emotional while still being modern and stylish. The staff there are always exceptional and make everything run so smoothly from start to finish. I’ve photographed many weddings at The Story and they genuinely continue to impress every single time.
Sara made her entrance with proud dad Keith, and you could instantly see the emotion on Malcolm’s face as he saw her walking toward him. Those moments are impossible to fake and impossible to predict. Every couple reacts differently, and that’s what makes wedding photography so special.
The ceremony itself had the perfect mixture of love, laughter and heartfelt emotion. There were smiles throughout, plenty of laughs from the guests, and those quieter emotional moments that remind everyone exactly why weddings matter so much.
One of the things I love about photographing ceremonies is capturing all the reactions happening around the room. It’s not just about the couple. It’s about parents wiping away tears, guests smiling at one another, children watching curiously, and all those fleeting moments people often miss in real time.
Sara and Malcolm’s ceremony seemed to fly by, which is always a sign that everyone was completely immersed in the moment. Before long, vows had been exchanged, rings were on fingers, and the room erupted into applause as they were officially announced as husband and wife.
The Grand Staircase Portraits
One of the standout features of The Story Durham is the incredible grand staircase, and it always creates a dramatic backdrop for portraits immediately after the ceremony.
As soon as the ceremony ended, we headed over for some bride and groom portraits while guests began making their way outside. The staircase offers such an elegant setting and adds a timeless feel to the photographs.
Sara and Malcolm were brilliant to photograph together. Completely relaxed, constantly smiling and clearly enjoying every second of their wedding day. Some couples need a little guidance in front of the camera, but these two simply enjoyed being together, which made everything feel effortless.
Natural interaction always photographs best. A quiet conversation, a laugh together, holding hands for a moment — those are the photographs couples treasure most years later because they reflect how the day actually felt.
The staircase portraits were a perfect combination of elegance and joy. Sara’s dress looked incredible against the backdrop of the venue, and the excitement of having just become husband and wife was written all over their faces.
Formal Photography Outside
After the staircase portraits, we headed back outside into the sunshine for the formal family photographs.
The atmosphere throughout the afternoon was fantastic. Everyone was in high spirits, guests were laughing constantly, and there was such a relaxed and friendly feel among both families and friends.
Formal photography is an important part of any wedding day because these are often the photographs that end up framed on walls and treasured by families for years. I always try to keep this section moving quickly and naturally so guests can enjoy the celebrations without spending too long away from the party.
Thankfully, Sara and Malcolm’s guests were brilliant. Everyone was cooperative, smiling and enjoying themselves, which made everything run smoothly.
The weather really couldn’t have been better. Warm sunshine, blue skies and beautiful light created ideal conditions for outdoor photography. Durham looked stunning in the afternoon sun, and every part of the venue seemed to glow.
Family photographs don’t have to feel stiff or overly formal either. Some of my favourite moments happen in between the posed shots — people laughing, hugging, joking with one another and simply enjoying being together.
Bride & Groom Portraits on the Lawn
Once the family photographs were finished, we had some time to head onto the lawn for bride and groom portraits.
This is often one of my favourite parts of the day because it gives couples a chance to step away from the crowd for a few quiet moments together. Weddings move incredibly fast, and couples rarely get time alone to properly take everything in.
Sara and Malcolm were fantastic together. Relaxed, affectionate and genuinely enjoying every moment. There was no need for complicated posing or anything overly staged. The best wedding photographs come from connection, and these two had that naturally.
The grounds at The Story looked amazing in the sunshine. The open lawn, elegant architecture and soft afternoon light combined perfectly for romantic portraits that felt timeless and natural.
We spent time walking, chatting and capturing moments naturally as they unfolded. Some couples worry about portraits taking too long, but these sessions are always kept relaxed and enjoyable. It’s less about posing and more about giving couples a moment to breathe and enjoy being newly married.
Sara looked absolutely incredible throughout the portraits. Her dress moved beautifully in the light breeze, and the happiness on both of their faces made every image feel authentic and full of emotion.
Bishop Auckland Rugby Club Reception
After the portraits, guests began making their way to Bishop Auckland Rugby Club for the evening celebrations.
Wedding receptions always bring a completely different energy to the day. The ceremony emotions settle, everyone relaxes even more, and the focus shifts toward celebrating together.
When I arrived at the Rugby Club, it was immediately obvious how much effort had gone into decorating the venue. Everything looked fantastic and perfectly suited the atmosphere of the day. Thoughtful details, beautiful decorations and a welcoming atmosphere helped transform the space into the perfect setting for Sara and Malcolm’s evening celebrations.
One of the lovely things about weddings is seeing how couples personalise their day. Every wedding reflects the people at the centre of it, and Sara and Malcolm’s celebration felt warm, welcoming and family-focused from beginning to end.
The Mock Cake Cutting
Before leaving for the evening, I stayed long enough to capture a mock cake cutting along with some wedding ring photographs.
Cake cutting photographs are always fun because they often create some great natural reactions and laughter. Even a quick mock version gives couples another little moment together in front of the camera before the evening properly begins.
The wedding cake looked fantastic and tied in beautifully with the rest of the styling throughout the reception.
I also took some time to photograph the wedding rings. Ring shots are always a lovely way to capture the finer details of the day. Every wedding has little elements that couples spend months planning, and I always try to include those details in the final gallery because they help tell the full story of the wedding.
A Perfect Spring Wedding Day
As I left Bishop Auckland Rugby Club, the celebrations were only just getting started, but it already felt like the perfect ending to a brilliant day of wedding photography.
Sara and Malcolm’s wedding had everything you could hope for as a photographer — fantastic people, beautiful weather, genuine emotion, laughter, family connection and two people completely enjoying every second of their day together.
From Malcolm and Jack arriving together at The Story, to Sara’s stunning entrance with her bridesmaids and family, through to the emotional ceremony, sunshine-filled portraits and evening celebrations, every part of the day flowed naturally and effortlessly.
The Story Durham once again proved why it’s such an incredible wedding venue. The staff there are genuinely amazing and always help create a relaxed, enjoyable experience for couples and guests alike. Combined with beautiful weather and such a lovely couple, it created the ideal setting for unforgettable wedding photographs.
Thank You
Sara and Malcolm, thank you so much for allowing me to be part of your wedding day.
It was an absolute pleasure to photograph your celebration from start to finish. You were both fantastic throughout the entire day — relaxed, kind, welcoming and completely focused on enjoying every moment together.
Thank you as well to all your family and friends for being so friendly and making the day such a joy to photograph.
And finally, a special mention to Jack, who absolutely nailed the role of mini best-dressed gentleman in his matching suit.
Congratulations again to you both. I hope these photographs allow you to relive every smile, every laugh and every emotional moment from your wedding day for many years to come.
