Lynne & Kevin’s Wedding at The Story in Durham

Family, Generations, and a Day Full of Love

Arriving Early – A Photographer’s Habit

If you’ve followed my blogs for any length of time, you’ll know one thing about me — I like to arrive early. Not five minutes early, not “cutting it fine” early, but properly early. Thirty minutes, sometimes more. It’s partly a practical thing; I like to check my camera gear, make sure lenses are clean, memory cards are formatted, and batteries are fully charged. But truthfully, the bigger reason is that I love those pre-wedding moments.

There’s something magical about the atmosphere before the formalities kick in. Guests drift in, laughter bubbles up in little groups, hugs are exchanged, nerves peek through the smiles, and excitement fills the air. Weddings are about more than the ceremony — they’re about connection. Being there early lets me witness that connection starting to unfold, and it often provides some of my favourite candid shots.

On this particular morning in Durham, the weather was on our side. It was one of those warm, pleasant mornings where the light feels soft and welcoming. The sky carried a gentle cloud cover, which photographers secretly adore — no harsh shadows, no squinting, just smooth, even tones that flatter everyone.

When I arrived at The Story registry office, I expected the usual early trickle of guests: perhaps Kevin pacing with his best man, a couple of relatives chatting in the corner, maybe one or two children already testing the patience of their parents. Instead, I walked into a courtyard that was already buzzing with life.

The wedding party had clearly decided that today was a day to be savoured from the very start. Friends and family were chatting, hugging, and laughing as though they had been waiting all week for this moment. At the centre of it all stood Kevin — sharp suit, proud smile, and just a touch of those wedding-day nerves that every groom carries. By his side, family members kept him steady, reminding him that in just a little while, he’d be standing at the front of the ceremony room, watching Lynne walk down the aisle.

Those moments — the nervous groom surrounded by love, the early chatter, the sense of anticipation — are a photographer’s dream. They’re unscripted, honest, and absolutely priceless.

The Arrival – Lynne with Kayleigh, Primrose, and Maid of Honour Joanne

While Kevin and the guests were filling the courtyard with laughter, Lynne was making her entrance in style. She arrived with her daughter Kayleigh, granddaughter Primrose, and her Maid of Honour Joanne.

There’s something powerful about seeing a bride step out of the car surrounded by women who love and support her. Lynne’s eyes sparkled with that mix of nerves and joy every bride knows. Kayleigh, calm and composed, stood steady beside her mum, offering reassurance with just a glance. Joanne, as Maid of Honour, had the quiet confidence of someone who knew her role: keep Lynne relaxed, keep everything flowing, and carry the kind of calm energy that’s infectious.

Primrose, Lynne’s granddaughter, added her own special charm to the moment. Dressed perfectly for the occasion, she carried the pride of someone who knew she was playing a big role in her nana’s day. Children have this wonderful way of softening the edges of a wedding day — their laughter cuts through nerves, and their innocence reminds everyone what’s really important.

Before heading in, I grabbed the chance for a few quick portraits on The Story’s famous front steps. I never tire of those steps — they have a way of turning any arrival into a grand entrance. Framed by Durham’s elegant registry office, Lynne, Kayleigh, Primrose, and Joanne looked every bit the picture of family unity and bridal beauty.

After the steps, we moved into the Bridal Preparation Room, one of the venue’s hidden gems. Bright and calm, it’s the perfect spot for those final adjustments before walking into the ceremony. Here, Lynne was joined by her dad Tom and grandsons Kasper and Reid. The joy on Tom’s face as he prepared to walk his daughter down the aisle was unmistakable — a mixture of pride, nostalgia, and pure love. Kasper and Reid, brimming with excitement, added energy and laughter to the room. It was the perfect blend of calm and chaos that makes pre-ceremony moments so memorable.

A Procession Led by the Grandkids

If there’s a single moment that will stay with me from this wedding, it’s the procession.

The ceremony room at The Story is always filled with a sense of elegance and anticipation, but when the doors opened and the grandchildren — Primrose, Kasper, and little Reid — stepped forward, the atmosphere shifted. Suddenly, it wasn’t just about two adults getting married; it was about generations, about family, about the bonds that tie everyone together.

The three of them walked with a mix of pride and excitement, their faces lit up, their steps slightly uneven in that charming way only children can manage. The guests melted. You could hear a collective “aww” ripple through the room as everyone leaned forward to watch them.

Behind them came Kayleigh and Joanne, carrying themselves with grace and poise, their smiles reflecting the happiness of the moment. And then, finally, Lynne appeared with her dad Tom at her side. Nervous? Absolutely. Radiant? Without question.

As they walked down the aisle, you could see Kevin’s face soften. The nerves that had been flickering all morning vanished as soon as his eyes met Lynne’s. It’s always the same at weddings: that first look during the aisle walk has a way of grounding everything. Two people, a room full of loved ones, and a moment that changes everything.

The Ceremony – Warmth and Smiles All Round

One of the things I admire most about The Story is how the staff deliver every ceremony with a balance of professionalism and genuine warmth. It doesn’t feel like a tick-box exercise or a scripted routine — it feels personal, heartfelt, and relaxed.

For Lynne and Kevin, the registrars struck that perfect tone once again. They guided the couple through every stage, making sure both they and the guests felt comfortable.

Anne’s mam and dad, Tom and Rose, looked on with pride, their faces glowing as they watched their family join together. Kevin’s mam, Lana, couldn’t hide her smile — you could see just how much this day meant to her.

Tom gave Lynne away with the pride only a father can carry, and Kasper and Reid took on the all-important ring duty with seriousness that made everyone smile. There’s something special about involving grandchildren in the ceremony itself — it adds layers of meaning and memory that will last for years.

The vows themselves were simple but powerful. You could almost see the nerves dissolve as Lynne and Kevin spoke their promises. By the time rings were exchanged, the atmosphere was filled with joy.

And then came the words everyone had been waiting for: husband and wife. The room erupted in applause, the kind of applause that isn’t just polite but truly celebratory.

Maid of Honour Magic

A Maid of Honour can make or break a wedding day. Luckily, Lynne had Joanne — and she was flawless. From the moment she arrived, Joanne carried the calm reassurance every bride needs. She made sure Lynne’s dress was perfect, checked that the veil sat just right, kept the bouquet in the right place, and offered steady words whenever nerves threatened to creep in.

More than that, she was present — genuinely present. She laughed when Lynne laughed, held her hand when she needed it, and made sure the day flowed smoothly. Brides often say they couldn’t have done it without their Maid of Honour, and in Lynne’s case, it couldn’t have been truer.

Photos on the Grand Staircase

After the ceremony, we moved to one of my absolute favourite features of The Story: the Grand Staircase. Sweeping, elegant, dramatic — it’s the kind of backdrop photographers dream of.

As Lynne and Kevin stepped onto the staircase, the light streaming in through the large windows seemed to spotlight them perfectly. They looked incredible framed by the bannisters, the contrast of elegant architecture and natural joy creating images that will no doubt become family favourites.

We captured romantic shots, fun shots, and those candid smiles that come when the formality fades and the reality sets in: we’re married.

From the staircase, the family gathered below, cheering them on. It wasn’t just about photos — it was about creating memories in one of Durham’s most iconic wedding spaces.

Group Photos – Joy and Generations

Next, it was time for the group photos outside. Now, let me be honest: group photos can sometimes be the most challenging part of a wedding day. Getting everyone in place, making sure no one wanders off, coaxing smiles out of tired kids — it can be chaos. But not with this group.

Families assembled quickly, guests were eager to be included, and the laughter never stopped. Kasper pulled a cheeky face in one shot, Reid decided he wasn’t going to stand still in another, and Primrose lit up every photo she was in. Those little imperfections are what make the photos perfect.

Group shots aren’t just about formality; they’re about history. Decades from now, Lynne and Kevin’s grandchildren will look back at these images and see exactly who was there, smiling and celebrating on this day. They’ll see themselves as children, standing proudly with their grandparents. That’s why these photos matter so much.

We finished with a few portraits by the Rolls Royce wedding car — sleek, classic, and the perfect symbol of celebration. Then, it was time to head off to the reception.

Reception at The Bay Horse, Brandon – A Warm and Relaxed Celebration

After the ceremony, my next stop was The Bay Horse in Brandon, where the newlyweds had chosen to host their reception. When I arrived, the bride and groom were already seated among their guests, enjoying the first moments of relaxation after the excitement of the “I do’s.” There was a wonderful atmosphere in the room – laughter, chatter, and the clinking of glasses filling the cosy space.

I quickly set about capturing the scene, starting with the couple themselves. It’s always special to photograph those natural, candid interactions when the formalities are over and everyone can simply be themselves. The Bay Horse, with its rustic charm and welcoming feel, gave the perfect backdrop for these moments.

Soon after, we arranged a mock cake cutting. Even though the couple were already comfortable among their guests, they were more than happy to step aside for this traditional photo opportunity. As always, it brought smiles, laughter, and applause from the room – the kind of light-hearted moment that adds to the story of the day.

With that done, I moved around the room for a walk-through of the tables. This is a part of the reception I always enjoy. Each table had its own personality – from grandparents reminiscing and raising glasses, to friends swapping stories, to children cheekily eyeing up the desserts. Capturing these natural interactions is just as important as the posed group shots, because they tell the real story of how the day was lived.

The Bay Horse made everything feel easy and unhurried. The staff ensured that guests were well looked after, while the couple could relax and take in all the love and laughter surrounding them. My role was simply to work quietly in the background, ensuring those fleeting smiles, glances, and embraces were preserved forever in photographs.

Though my time at the reception was brief, it was filled with warmth, fun, and heartfelt moments that summed up exactly what a wedding celebration should be. The Bay Horse in Brandon once again showed itself to be a welcoming and characterful venue – a wonderful choice for couples who want a relaxed, personal atmosphere for their big day.

Wrapping Up – A Wedding About Family

By the end of the day, one thing was clear: this wasn’t just a wedding. It was a celebration of family.

Every detail reflected generations coming together. Lynne and Kevin were supported at every step — by daughter Kayleigh, by grandchildren Primrose, Kasper, and Reid, by Anne’s mam and dad Tom and Rose, by Kevin’s mam Lana, and by Joanne, the ever-supportive Maid of Honour.

It was a wedding where children laughed, grandparents beamed, and the couple at the centre of it all looked nothing but happy.

Weddings come in all shapes and sizes — some grand, some intimate, some elaborate, some simple. But the ones that linger in memory are the ones that carry heart. And Lynne and Kevin’s wedding at The Story in Durham had heart in abundance.

For me as a photographer, it was a privilege to capture every glance, every smile, every hug, and every laugh. Long after the confetti has blown away and the cake has been eaten, these photographs will remain — a record of a family’s love story on one unforgettable day.
