To give you a better sense of his approach, here are 20 questions with John Alderson Wedding Photography.
About You & Your Style
How did you first get into wedding photography, and what inspired you to make it your career?
My first wedding was for a friend 33 years ago, then a friend of a friend, and it escalated from there.
Weddings are full of real, unrepeatable moments — laughter, nerves, joy, tears — and I’ve always loved capturing those. After years teaching photography and working as a graphic designer and in sales management, I realised what truly made me happy was documenting people’s love stories. It’s not just a job for me, it’s a passion.
How would you describe your photography style in three words?
Relaxed. Emotional. Storytelling.
What sets John Alderson Wedding Photography apart from other photographers in the North East?
I bring a mix of professional experience, local venue knowledge, and a genuine love for people. My style is natural and unforced. I’m also very transparent about pricing — no hidden extras, no pressure to buy big packages. I believe in kindness, honesty, and delivering photography that feels true to each couple.
Do you prefer candid moments or posed shots?
Candid, every time. They’re the moments couples remember most — a hug, a laugh, a tear. Posed group shots are important for family history, but candid storytelling is where the magic is.
How do your awards and qualifications influence your work?
Winning North East Wedding Photographer of the Year three times and earning my Licentiate with the SWPP reminds me I’m on the right path. They reassure couples they’re booking a trusted professional, and they also push me to keep learning and raising the bar.
On the Wedding Day
What’s your approach to capturing the emotions of a wedding day?
I arrive early, blend in, and observe. The best moments often happen when no one’s expecting it — a bride taking a deep breath before walking down the aisle, or a nervous groom laughing with his best man. My approach is to anticipate, not interrupt.
How early do you usually arrive?
Always early — usually 30 minutes or more. It gives me time to check my kit, scout locations, and capture the build-up as guests arrive. Those pre-ceremony moments are priceless.
What’s the most challenging part of photographing a wedding?
Group photos can be tricky — there’s always someone heading to the bar or a toddler running away. I keep it lighthearted, calm, and organised. A smile and a bit of humour always help.
Do you have a favourite part of the wedding day to photograph?
The ceremony. No two are ever the same. The emotion is raw, genuine, and unforgettable.
How do you keep couples and guests relaxed in front of the camera?
By talking to them. Joking, reassuring, and never rushing. If people feel comfortable, the photos naturally reflect that.
Venues & Locations
Which North East wedding venues do you enjoy most?
I love The Story in Durham for its elegant rooms and grand staircase. Walworth Castle is a favourite for its history and quirks, and Runa Farm is fantastic for its space, atmosphere, and amazing staff.
Any tips for couples choosing a venue that photographs well?
Look for natural light, neutral décor, and usable outdoor space. Even if it rains, you’ll want a sheltered spot for portraits.
What’s the most unique venue you’ve photographed?
One of the most memorable was ceremony in a field, in the open air, with Ripon Cathedral in the background. Small, intimate, and perfect for the couple.
Which local venues work well for couples on a budget?
Registry offices like The Story in Durham are beautiful and affordable. Civic halls such as Shildon Civic Hall are also excellent value. At the end of the day, it’s about the people, not the price tag.
Practical Advice for Couples
What advice do you give couples when planning their wedding photography timeline?
Always allow more time than you think you’ll need. Weddings rarely run to the minute, so building in breathing space reduces stress and ensures you enjoy the day.
What should couples look for when choosing their photographer?
Connection. Do you like their style, but more importantly, do you feel comfortable with them? You’ll spend a lot of time together on your wedding day, so it’s important.
How far in advance should couples book?
As early as possible. I’ve had bookings three years ahead, and summer Saturdays go fast. If you like my work, don’t wait too long.
What happens if it rains?
We embrace it. I’ve done portraits under umbrellas, group shots indoors, and even bubble runs in drizzle. Rain adds character, and sometimes the photos turn out even better than expected.
Personal Touch
Do you have a favourite wedding memory?
There are so many, but children often make the day unforgettable. A toddler stealing the dancefloor or a little boy pulling faces in every group shot — those are the moments couples cherish.
What do you love most about being a wedding photographer?
The privilege. I get to witness people’s happiest moments and give them memories they’ll treasure forever. When a couple tells me my photos made them cry, laugh, and relive their day, I know I’ve done my job.
